Wheel rim widths.

Here's one for you. My car had its first service today at just over 15000 miles. When the dealer called to say it was ready and ran through the work they'd done and points to note, they told me that it has the wrong size wheels on the back!

I said I was aware that the rear tyres were wider, but she told me that the actual rim was the wrong size for the tyre and it should be a wider rim for that tyre. She reckoned the rear rim was the same size as the front.

Now I've just been out to take some rough measurements and I'm getting 9" on the rear and 8.5" on the front. There does appear to be a more pronounced bulge on the sidewall of the front tyres compared to the rear. Front tyre shown below.

Has anyone else had a similar comment or can others check their rims for comparison? They're the 17" wheels by the way.

I'm guessing you got the car from new?
Have you had the tyres changed and the tyre fitter mixed the rims up?
What are MB planning to do about it.

Yep car was brand new from the factory when I got it and no work has been done on the tyres. They're the original.

I said to the dealer that it must have come from the factory like that but they said I need to take it up with the lease company, which is Lex. I'll call Lex tomorrow and see what they say.

The girl did say my rear tyres were more worn than the front and this is probably why. And no, it's not because I'm spinning the rear wheels!

From what I've worked out, there are two options with the 17" twin spoke wheel.

7 x 17" wheels with 225/50/17 tyres all round
or
7 x 17" wheels with 225/50/17 tyres on the front
8 x 17" wheels with 245/45/17 tyres on the rear

The style of the wheel looks the same, so without finding the casting marks on the back it's hard to know which size it is. On the C350e it should be the 8 x 17" on the rear of the car.

Good luck sorting it out!

Just took a look at mine and they look very similar to your photos front and back.

I have 18" wheels. The back wheels and back tyres are bigger than the fronts (245 back, 225 front). However, my back tyres had been transformed to slicks by 13,000miles!!

That's useful to know. A colleague in the office also has a 350e so I'll have a look at his next time he's in and compare.

From the rough measurements I took last night (from the inside of the wheel rim to the outside) there is a discernible difference of half an inch wider on the back. The tyres are definitely 245 on the rear and 225 on the front.

The only way to tell for certain is to get your head underneath and read the casting marks on the wheel. It will look something like this:

Kmph

Taken delivery today, only had a short drive but noticed one of the displays is in kmph in small at bottom left of screen. Is there any way to change this to mph? I've looked in manual but can't immediately see anything.

Many thanks

Sadly not. It would be better if it was an option to switch on when you need it, but I've read elsewhere that Merc claim it's an EU requirement to have it on permanent display in the UK market. :dk:

Enjoy the car in spite of this!

Thank you for your reply. I'm certainly looking forward to finding out what it's capable of, once I've finished reading the instruction manual!

My workmate was in today so we checked his tyres and they're the same.

From the rim the front tyres project about 20mm to the sidewall whereas the rear only project 10mm.

I'll whip the wheels off this weekend and see what the casting marks say.

If the tyres and wheels are correct, the fronts should project slightly more than the rear, but it is only slight:

Front tyres are 225mm. 7" wheels are 177.8mm. So the tyre is 47.2mm bigger than the rim.

Rear tyres are 245mm. 8" wheels are 203.2mm. So the tyre is 41.8mm bigger than the rim.

If you think you have 7" wheels on the back, you will have a tyre 67.2mm bigger than the rim, so it will project out a good chunk more than the front.

However it is very difficult to measure these things on the car, with the tyre under load. If you do get chance to take the rear wheels off, it will be really interesting to hear what you've got. They should be 8J x 17 with 245 tyres. If you've got 7J on the back, it would be very interesting to see what you've got on the front!

Wow, just spent a couple of hours reading 136 pages of posts.
Some really useful tips - shame there is no subdivision of topics!

After an 8 month wait I now have a white estate with 360 degree camera as only extra. Others seemed expensive and push price over £40k.

I have a quilt boot liner and a smile on my face every time I use the car.

First ever speeding ticket in 41 years though within first week!

c350e brake feel

Hi All, Had a couple of E250's prior to the C350e the car overall is top one thing niggles the brakes have a strange feel when the car is coming to stand still the servos seem to have a mind of their own ?...any one else experiencing this ? first noticed this on a demo that had 15,000 on clock, I thought the brakes may have had warped discs, but the same feeling is on my new one when you are just coming to stand still...

Any feedback welcome

Completely agree. I think the balance between energy regeneration and friction braking is a bit clunky.

I don't drive much in sport or sport+. My guess is that it'll be better in those modes than in comfort or eco.

Had mine 4 weeks, 800 miles. Love the car. A few little things - I agree with the post about the brakes feeling weird and having no a mind of their own, but that doesn't particularly bother me.

3 things I've questions on. One is a symbol on the console - just want to check that it means that the passenger airbag is disabled. Not sure why there is a 2 number next to the symbol - 2nd person? Just seems odd, and can't get 100% confirmed from manual

Second is sat Nav audio - can you turn off the voice and just receive the onscreen directions? I use sat Nav in the drive to work so it can make the best use of the batteries and to check for traffic. But I've driven the route for 5 years so I know the way!!!

And 3rd ... I can heard a constant very high pitch noise. Most noticeable when the stereo is off. My dad used to have an animal/pest scarer and the range of noise is like that (he couldn't hear it). Anyone rlse? Would rather not both with taking it in, as I bet they will say they can't hear it. Anyway - any comments appreciated.
