C350e owners club

Unfortunately, I think you'll probably have to resort to a spreadsheet to get a decent idea of what'll work best for you. An economy 7 style tariff would work well assuming you charge at night, and can make use of some other benefits by shifting times you do things like washing or heating water.

Probably the first step is to work out roughly how much energy you will be putting in the car on an average month, comparing that with your current(!) use and getting a feel for the change.

FWIW, buying the car encouraged me to get solar PV and a Powerwall installed so my charges are now "free" (ignoring the upfront cost of course.....). They won't be free come winter but will still be cheaper.

By way of a small experiment I finally got round to trying out e-mode today. 12 miles of mixed driving and had 40% charge remaining when I got home. I reckon that probably equates to at least 18 miles which is OK. More useful though was finding out how it feels with just 80bhp to play with. I find it more relaxing to drive it in e-mode then Hybrid for some bizarre reason. Probably because you can mash the throttle without 'worrying' it's going to fire up the ICE, which suits me for certain types of journey. It's daft I know, but at times, I find the way the ICE keeps cutting in and out a bit irritating. Yes, you can control it with careful application of the torque demand pedal but it can be a bit touchy.

Confess I was a bit sceptical about the value of the mode switch, but having tried it, I think it'll be useful.

Anyone have advice on energy providers for those that regularly charge at home?

Just moved house and looking at suppliers... cheapest according to money saving expert is economy energy for me. 12.380p per kWh and standing charge of 14.0p per day.

However n power unit rate is cheaper at 11.540p per kWh with a more expensive standing charge at 24.255p per day.

Am I right in thinking that when regularly charging an ev the cheapest unit rate per kWh is the best option, despite a more expensive standing charge?

Thanks

DTJ, you need to look at your current annual consumption and add in what you think you will add to that through recharging the 350e. Then calc that against all the tariffs. Beware some of the comparison sites which have an unrealistic night usage. Some estimate as much as 30% of total use at night (0.00 to 7.00). Even charging the 350e in that time range shouldn't get anywhere near those figures, assuming a busy household.

Scottish power have an economy 7 tarrif charging to a unit and 12p for daytime use.. can't remember standing charge off top of my head but will post later

I think it's worth using that switch, especially on roads you know. I use mine regularly. I wish it was on the right hand side of the console!

Quite agree - gives away it's LHD origin doesn't it. TBH, you could almost wish it was on the wheel.

Mine's straight into e-mode for all journeys within electric range. And at the end of longer journeys to squeeze out the last few electrons. And on journeys that are just outside electric range, I drop into hybrid for hills that would use a big chunk of battery range. It does make me wonder if I could manage with a pure electric vehicle. There should be a few more to choose from when this lease ends in 2020.

I think I would have put it on the console where the volume "roller" is.
Then both "mode" toggles would be together.

Having said that, I do think the volume roller is one of the best controls I've had in a car. I don't know why, but I just find it very satisfying. Do I need to get out more? :o

You know how keyless go can sense when the key is in the car and won't let you lock the car? Well... I was washing my car the other night and as usual I put the key inside the car otherwise the hosepipe squirting the door handles causes constant locks and unlocks. I shut the door, turned the hosepipe on, and the car locked! Logic suggests that if that was the case, I should be able to open it again, but no such luck. So the moral of the story is don't leave your key in the car.

Luckily I had my phone on me so I could unlock it using the power of Mercedes Me.

I think I'll adopt that method now as well. Except when I feel the need for a bit of Sport+ of course. Lets face it, most driving these days is so congested or speed restricted, 80bhp is plenty.

I KNOW I could manage with a pure EV.....provided it was similar to the C in terms of refinement comfort equipment etc. I personally have zero interest in the more extreme EVs out there. I might look at the I-Pace when it arrives as a practical alternative to having both the C350e and the Jeep (5.7l skip on wheels).

Good job your car had a data connection! Mine told me to get lost once last week when I tried to set a departure time. It's the first time I've had a problem for months though.

My personal tale of woe is that I'm now into my fourth week of not being able to charge because my 3-pin charging cable just stopped working and there are no replacement units available in this or any other known universe.

Yes sir, it's failed. Yes sir, it's a warranty replacement. No sir, we don't have one in stock. No sir, nor do any of our other dealers. No sir, nor does MB UK. No sir, nor does MB Germany, they're on back order. No sir, we don't have a demo car we could loan it from.

Good job I still have a petrol engine to fall back on or I'd be, literally, stuck.

Costing me money, but more annoyingly it's bringing my long-term mpg right down.

Grrrr.
Delivery date for my replacement charger cable is now end of August - that'll be nearly 3 months to get hold of one. You can imagine what I think of that and how much it's costing me in petrol as I was a charge-every-night man.

Good job MB don't make pure-EV machines yet ...

Does rather defeat the object doesn't it. Saw a similar issue on another forum with a 330e, but apparently the dealer blamed the owner for using the "occasional use only" charger too often and seem to expect the owner to replace it at their own cost.

Offer to buy one... I bet they'd soon find one then..

Hi all, any tips for driving in France. Do I need the headlight reflector things on my C350e?

Unless you have the ILS system you do not need to do anything to the lights. If you have ILS you need to change them over using the light setting within settings on the dash display. ( see page 124 of handbook if stuck.)

Fuel is far more expensive on the motorways. Stop at a supermarket and top up. Most have 24/7 self service machines. They will pre authorise about £100 then supply fuel after you fill reintroduce card for receipt. They then draw down the cost of the fuel.
To avoid exchange charges I took out a Halifax Clarity account. No charges and better exchange rate than M&S currency. Card also can be linked to smart phone so you can track spending as you go.

Motorway tolls add up ( Calais to Monaco return plus a few trips has just cost me £140)

No need to change lights unless you have ILS. ILS is changed over using settings on speedo display using steering wheel buttons.

Fuel is expensive on motorways (C. 20p L more) fill up at supermarket most have 24/7 pumps Use your card and pin. Most have language selection which helps. The machine will pre authorise an amount and after you fill you return your card into machine to get receipt.

To avoid card charges for purchases or cash I have a Halifax Clarity card. There are no fees and so long as you pay the card off it costs nothing. The exchange rate has always beaten M&S exchange rates. An additional advantage is you can hook the account up to your smart phone and so track spending and even pay it off when you are away.

Motorway tolls add up I have just paid £180 for a return trip Calais to Monaco with just a few small additional outings. Avoid the toll booth holdup with a motorway tag. See Eurotunnel site for details.

That is absolutely shocking. I'm on my second 3 pin unit and charge at least once a day off it, I don't think it will last till the end of the lease either.

They just don't seem to get that for many no charging is just not ok!
