C350e owners club

I didn't say I didn't like it, but that it wouldn't be my engine of choice.

Sorry - I'll try again: what would be your engine of choice?

I've just driven 3.5 hours I my manual, under-powered, diesel S-Max, so I reserve the right to be grumpy. It's nothing personal.

Re: 1, I can close everything i.e Windows and sunroof by pressing and holding the close button on the key fob. Not tried the reverse to open everything, prefer to set the air con using the remote app, meaning I step into a nicely cooled car after work!

2/ I know it can be done but not sure how as never attempted.

3/ I have just a few presets on the radio, then when in the nav screen you can press the little dimple at the back of the touch pad which brings a pop up, from which you can swipe left or right to scroll through your presets, useful for iPod or streaming music to identify and skip tracks also.

I assumed that pressing and holding the lock or unlock would operate the windows, but it never has so I gave up. Bit annoyed that it's 3.5 hours away cos I'd like to check again.

I'm quite happy with the 177 bhp in my E220d. Economy not a big issue as I only cover about 6000 miles a year.

Having had an S500 and an E220d coupe, you owe it to yourself to drive a larger engined car.

The E220 is a decent car but actually quite underpowered.

I realised this when I bought my 520d BMW and felt how much quicker their 184bhp is

I'm shocked how quickly I've gone off diesel, given that 4 of my last 5 cars were oil burners. I loved the torque and the economy, but now I can't wait for batteries to be cheaper so I can have an EV. Jag, Tesla, Nissan, Audi and others will all have interesting cars on the market in 3 years time. Combustion engines and gearboxes are increasingly feeling like last century's tech.

Are there any worthwhile updates?

I'm up to 6000 miles and everything is fine. I like the car with the following exceptions:
- the lack of an OAT display in place of the kph - have MB relented on this yet?
- the time it SOMETIMES takes for the SatNav to wake-up, the clunky interface and the strange routing - are there any updates?
- the occasional delay going into reverse

Are there any updates or mods that it's worth knowing about?

I said I'm happy with my E220, not overjoyed. I had a CLS 350 as a loan car last year, what an engine, what power. As I said in last years posts, with that engine I'd either be dead or have lost my license , either with a big grin on my face.

The reverse delay is very annoying, apparently better in sport or sport + but I can't be changing into that when I want to reverse.

It's like you need to get into reverse quickly sometimes the car leisurely makes the change you instinctively press the accelerator because nothing is happening the engine starts and you take off backwards!

Diesel is an odd choice when doing 6k a year, I do 11-12k and always felt I didn't really do enough miles for a diesel but it was ok as they were lease so I didn't worry about the dpf...plus I used to hoof it from time to time for the regen.

I had my first diesel about six years ago, always been anti diesel until then.I went from a 2.0tfsi Audi TT into a 170bhp VW diesel and was converted, it's the mid range torque of the diesel that makes driving so effortless. As to the odd choice for 6000 miles, have you ever tried to part ex a petrol Mercedes .Might be different now that diesel is the devil. I do regular trips of 40 miles so not too worried about the dpf.

Uh oh! Mercedes Me update for iOS incoming. I wonder what will be broken this time?

Is there a way to set which driving mode is active when starting the car?

I really would like to set it to e-mode so that I accidentally don't start the ICE all the time...

Nope, defaults back to comfort mode after so many hours parked up.

Hi Wrighty, You've done 40k miles, I seem to remember you ripped through your 1st set of tyres after about 8k, hah, hah. That means you might be on or about to boot up your C350e with a 5th set! Any views on tyre choice, ie performance, comfort, noise? Or have you just stuck with the same make? Good thoughts, btw.

The original Continentals have very bad reviews for life expectancy so I did try some Kumho tyres for my third set. The good news; they lasted much longer than the Contis. The bad news; they lasted too long! The handling and road noise were terrible. I have recently (happily) put the original Continentals back on for my forth set!

I definitely think this is a car for people who mostly do 50 miles or less per day (and preferably have the ability to charge at each end!). I did sign up for "Charge Your Car" but now it charges £1 for any charging (which is less than the benefit you'd gain) I'll never use it again.

Pros: the "free" air suspension which does make it a nice ride. Pretty fast when you need it to be (and without hitting Sport+ which just makes annoying noises). It is nice to waft around on electric power and now I'd figured out how/when to use E-Mode - I can get 99+mpg on my gym trip (19 miles) - although not in winter!

Cons: annoying when you deplete the battery and either have a very heavy 2l with no extra zip OR have to use Charge mode (which really hammers mpg). If the battery had twice the capacity, I'd be VERY sold on this car - and it does OK for me - but at about 10k miles per year and mostly short trips. Throw in a few 200+ mile trips and I'm also at that 45mpg average - so most diesels would do better.

I think I agree with that, and if you believe the stats, the "average driver" does 20 mile trips, so they are bang on.
