How's everyone's experience of public charging been?

I've recently received my charge cards for 2 different networks (CYC & Polar).

I can't see myself using public charge points that extensively but there are times i'll be able to sneak some charge in (mainly when getting some shopping in). For example there's an Aldi supermarket close to me in Manchester city centre which has a CYC point on the street next to it which i've recently parked at and got a successful charge from (as well as a few funny looks).

My Polar card also recently arrived, whilst there aren't many polar charge points in Manchester, there is one in an Asda that's halfway between my work and my home so I signed up for that in the hope that I can get a few charges in whilst doing a shop.

Although it must be said the Polar card isn't anything like as good as the CYC card. CYC charges are free and sometimes you don't have to pay for the on street parking either. The Polar card however charges your bank account directly for the charge (something like 9 pence per kWh), which doesn't exactly break the bank but annoyingly Polar also charge £7.95 per month subscription service on top of your charging costs, which has to be said, is a total rip off. I'm giving Polar a go though as the first 6 months are free, so i'll probably cancel after 6 months.

Haven't used my CYC card yet (got that free with my Rolec)

Registered and got my free Ecotricity car - primarily for the motorway network ... May as well get a free charge whilst parking at the front [emoji12]

My Source London card was £5 for approx 6 months and charging is free and I use that 2 or 3 times a week. It means I can charge at both ends of my 21 mile journey between home and work

It would be nice if there was one charging network IMHO

Just signed up for the Electricity card now. Will be handy for visits to the service stations.

Insane that i'll soon have 3 different types of charge card in my wallet

Just leave 'em in the car ... that's what I do, but then none of them charge to my back account direct

First commute in. Enjoying the stop start pilot and the mpg!

Agreed, I've got a few apps to help find me charging points.
It's worth noting that at some point ecotricity are planning on charging for charging. Lots of discussion on dedicated EV sites.

I've found that actually apart from a few sporadic places most charging stations cost moneyand often they have a fixed admin fee too. An example was up in Northumberland, thechargi g station were £1.20 fee plus charging costs. Petrol is cheaper per mile! I think the network will continue to grow but will become more focussed on battery EVs rather than PHEVs...

I have previously made a few posts here where I said that I was very unhappy with the electric range. The longest I have been able to drive is 14km, and that includes a 5km downhill.
Today I was finally able to use a demo car from my dealer, and i compared 3 routes with my own car. All tests were done in the same conditions, all tests done in Comfort and E-mode. I think these tests confirm that something must be wrong with my car. I have written an email to the dealer with the details. What do you think?

Test 1: 13km, first 7km flat, then 6km mainly uphill. My car: After the 7km flat it showed a range of 4km, then right after starting on the uphill it switched to Hybrid and started the gas engine and used that for the rest of the trip. Demo car: Ranelectric all the way.
Test 2: 3.4km hilly loop. My car: Ran electric all the way, 68% left when finishing. Demo car: Ran electric all the way, 81% left when finishing.
Test 3: 7.5 km where 5 of them is downhill - elevation difference of 280m. Then back again the same way. My car: Ran electric for 13km. Then switched to Hybrid and started the gas engine. 9% left when finishing. Demo car: Ran electric all the way. 37% left when I finished.

I think that this showed a huge difference and that something must be wrong with my car. Comments?

I think the BEV lobby are hoping that charging will be done in such a way as to make it pointless for a PHEV to charge at a public point. The vitriolic pronouncements about PHEVs using the Ecotricity network are beyond belief on some of the EV forums. I wonder when my first altercation with an angry Leaf owner will be. They appear to be particularly angry about Ikea, Outlanders and people staying over 30 minutes or 80% charge.

I did a spreadsheet, and I can't remember the figures, but I think it worked out that if the cost for a full charge is more than approx £1.50 then you might as well not bother. With Polar charging £1.20 admin fee per charge plus a possible per kwh on top the margin before it is uneconomic is quite small.

Assume petrol is 1.06 per litre.

At 40mpg (seems to be what others find the car will do without battery charged) the cost is (4.546 x 1.06)/40= 12.04 per mile.

Now assume by a full charge you can travel 15 miles. The cost for the charge has to be less than £1.80 to break even with using petrol. Obviously at only 10 miles range that becomes £1.20 for the charge. Which at £1.20 flat rate leaves no room for power costs.

The calculations are very sensitive to the estimated electric range.

My domestic tariff is 12p per KWh so a charge costs me c. 72p and for that I seem to get 12 miles of city driving so 6p per mile. My x3 3.0d with similar power to the C350e would manage c. 32mpg in the city which is 15p per mile so I am happy!

Agree 100% ... you have to do the maths

I have two free cards and one that cost me £5 for 6 months but free charging (which I use 5 times a week) ... all no brainers

As soon as they start to ask for money per transaction it gets very sensitive to range

A friend with an Outlander says the Ecotricity points on motorways are good. If you have to stop for a coffee why not get some power (I think they are free). You then have to factor time value in as well.

I live in Birmingham and I have only once seen a car (Volvo) charging on one of the Polar points in the city centre. I can't see me plugging in on the street much. I can charge at home and the office with ease and will have to take my chances elsewhere. Even I would sympathise with an EV vehicle driver if all the bays were pinched by PHEVs at the moment I am not seeing that as an issue but the Tesla Model 3 could well change that.

On a slightly offbeat track - You and Yours (Radio 4 consumer programme) had an item on electric and hybrid vehicles. One of the concerns aired by their expert was that there weren't enough skilled independent mechanics available for the typical second hand buyer. From what we see here it appears that even the MB chain struggle to know what to do with hybrids but that will change in time and with 10 more being added to the range in the next 2 years.

His other concern was safety in this matter. Apparently the power in the batteries can give a shock greater than an electric chair!

Is Apple CarPlay now available on the C350e?

Is it possible to stream music from my iphone to the head unit without plugging the phone in?

Many thanks

I don't believe Apple CarPlay is ... certainly not seen it unless it gets enable during some new update

Yes it is possible to stream music from an iPhone without it plugged in via Bluetooth streaming

Apple Car Play def not available even as an option yet. It may come as a retro software upgrade.

The lack of it has caused unrest for some as there is a YouTube video of it working which must have been a prototype.

That's great, thank you for confirming. I've been informed by the leasing company that my car's expected delivery date is the end of June............ I won't be holding my breath though!!

I am using a 32gb SD card for music with Comand and it works great. Just copied the folders from my Mac's iTunes library that I wanted. I have an iPhone but don't bother putting a lot of music on it and Bluetooth audio controls are a bit limited. The SD card is a good and cheap alternative.

Enjoy the wait!

That's what I'm talking about...

An impressive 711 miles off one small tank of fuel. Charging mostly at home and the gym. This is exactly why I went for this model.

Was that all in Comfort and Hybrid modes? Refreshing to see good mileage. Thanks
