C350e owners club

An impressive 711 miles off one small tank of fuel. Charging mostly at home and the gym. This is exactly why I went for this model.

21mph average tells a lot though. This car can have immense mpg on short slow commutes. The small tank really hits on long motorway trips.

If my maths is correct, 711 miles total, 517 miles with engine off (ie using electric motor), that means a whole take of fuel has only done 198 miles!? I know the tank is small but........ Have I missed something?

If it used the ICE to charge the battery, that would be measured as electric miles not ICE miles wouldn't it?

I think the only fair way now of measuring like for like is pence per mile factoring all fuel costs (charging and petrol). Mpg does not take into account charging costs and the low ICE mpg probably comes form lots of little sips of petrol spread across a lot of miles and I wonder if there is some rounding that happens along the way.

I have chargemaster, ecotricity and sourcelondon.
ecotricity is great for the motorway, more so because you get the nearest parking station.
I was in a morrissons in North London this week (Colindale) and they had about 30 charging points, but they use a company who have a monthly subscription so there is not much point, especially when it is next door to a merc dealership.

Well, apparently after charging mine yesterday, i *ahem* may have accidentally left both charging flaps open all night in the pouring rain...

Can we assume that no news is good news? I hope so, not that I'm about to repeat your "experiment" to test it out!

So, six weeks WITHOUT my beloved c350e, still waiting for a new gearbox, today I managed to get Merc to deliver to me a top of the range CLS estate.
Told them that there is now no rush to get me my 350e back!!!!!

I am missing it.

wow 6 weeks... any ideas on time scales yet ?

CLS estate will be nice though!

Can anyone explain to me the bottom section of the consumption graph ?

Clearly the top line show MPG over the last 15 mins, but the bottom section cannot be the battery charge % as it jumps around so much ...

Looks like it shows to what extent the battery is being charged...e.g. maximum possible re-generative braking (100%).

Got back home tonight, had a look at the socket, nothing obvious, wife had done a good job of drying it out.

Started it up, no warning or error messages, so far so good. Will have to wait until the morning for me to take it out for a spin. Fingers crossed :thumb:

The manual says the green bars are "Electrical Energy Generated" so I reckon 100% (your most recent minute on the chart) would mean you spent a whole minute either going downhill and regenerating on the brakes or you had it in Charge mode. The off-the-scale MPG looks like the whole 15 mins was on electric apart from a blip of heavy-footedness in minute 3. Then mins 13 & 14 you were back to real-world ICE driving.

Thanks for that ...

IMHO - The 'Charge' label in green on the display should read 'Re-Charge'

I can just about get home from work (18 miles) on Electric only apart from the last 2-3 miles ... so that corresponds well - with the first 9 miles or so in South London traffic.

The car suits this kind of 36 mile commute very well indeed - free charge at work and overnight 6p/KWh Eco 7 charge at home - daily charging cost is approx 37 pence

26 miles on electric
10 miles on the ICE

Longer runs on motorways etc ... it's only average (as the fuelly stats suggest)

What we have to remember is that these beasties will turn the ICE off at every opportunity and my guess is they count any miles coasting as electric miles. Comparable stats from a pure ICE would include the coasting or idling mileage.

Assuming this is correct, the 198 miles would be the miles where the engine was actually pulling (er... pushing). Cost-per-mile average is probably the only way to compare.

Endlessly complicated! I love this car.

very true, i noted the same theory last night...

I drove 35 miles last night (and used charge, as i had no battery - and wanted to test the economy on the way home) - yes, fully aware of the cost of that outward tip :) - 22.7 MPG....

Anyway on the way back, i had a fully battery (Noted at 11 miles... - this rose to 17 miles within a few minutes).

I drove home like miss daisy, with the odd blip etc.

By the time i got home, still with 3 miles left on charge, i'd completed a 35 mile trip with 23 miles on battery. (So i by this i also assume on battery + coasting etc etc) - and had managed 89.2 mpg. :) - the charge certainly makes a massive difference.

If you have access to chargers at both ends of your daily commute, i could see about 30-40 miles being the limit to see some good savings on MPG.

Also whilst driving the niggles are still niggling me.

1) Why is the engine / hybrid / eco button not a rocker like the one that changes into sport / eco etc.? I find myself having to visibly try to find that button some times, and a rocker would make much more sense to me.

2) - that real-estate on the drivers screen needs some serious sorting out. Use all that space. Swapping between views is annoying. I really want to see my MPG, speed (in mph) and others together.... Trip counters etc.

3) As much as i do like the white and green bars at the bottom, would it not also make sense to show the actual battery charge Percentage just there. Guessing how many miles you have left is well, black magic. a percentage would be more useful. (And the green / white bars, well... dont mean much other then visibility of what is being used.

4) Totally agree, the wording on the charge / needs charge / red cable thing needs a bit of working on.

5) Navigating to places is still fiddly at best, and as much as the touch control unit down below has its benefits, the voice / hand controls take way to much time to find an address... (Mainly as i cant remember all the voice commands so spent 90% of the time repeating the word cancel over and over again). With my phone, i just say OK google... navigate me to... and its done.

6) - i've tried to set my destination 3 times now from my phone before going out to the car, each time... nothing, no destination set... and i've had to manually do it again... meh...

Don't get me wrong, i'm still impressed by the car, and my views have changed from my initial rants. I'm getting sued to its gimmicks, but just wish the design team had thought a bit more about how each part would be used etc.

Only done 2k miles, but loved most of them.

I am enjoying the journey with this car.

Re item 6 - to get destinations you have sent you have to go to the Internet section of Comand - right hand globe logo in the top strip. Choose Mercedes Benz Apps, choose PoI downloader and there they are! It is a bit of a pain especially as my connection via iPhone is patchy. The BMW sent them to the car as a text type message via the car's own SiM which meant they were always there.

Ahhh thanks for that - would never have thought to look there!! (Still haven't figured out how to get the internet enabled bit working with my SGS5 - another on the list thing to do :)

Will test the nav again later :)

They reckon that the new gearbox might be in the uk middle of next week, so either end of next week, or beginning of next.

CLS is a gorgeous car, but very very thirsty.

What were the signs and symptoms mm? Mine has a bit of a clock happening every time I pull away, even at a nuns pace, anyone else got this?

I had an error come up - Stop car, leave engine running, let Transmission cool down.
Did that, but then it came on again and car conked out.
They fixed that, but when the master technician took the car for a drive he noticed just once the gear slipped in 2nd. Diagnostics were read by Germany and told to replace gearbox. (although there aren't any spare gearboxes!!)
