 , calibrated dampening system?

May I suggest that you mean "damping system"? The word derives from the term "dampers" that preceded "shock absorbers". The "damper" was something that reduced the rate of burn in a fire or furnace; and was adopted in mechanics to describe the energy absorbing component in a "spring/mass/damper" system.

"Dampening" means making something wetter; no water is used or needed in a shock absorber.

Hope you don't mind this post; I know I'm on a losing wicket with this one, but some changes are hard to accept as one gets older....:)

Where does the elastic band fit into this?

Just driven 500+ miles across France to the early Alps near Clermont Ferrand at an excruciating 55-60 mph without any top-up electric charging. In "e" mode and Hybrid nearly all the way and using COMAND route guidance. The car seems to work as expected and is giving me 43 mpg consistently and is keeping the electric charge at 1-3 miles. I forced a full charge for a short while and got the electric range up to 16 miles for the first time. That did reduce the displayed mpg to 36 but it soon recovered when those electric miles were used. No problem getting petrol.

Have had to use the haptic once or twice to escape from predatory trucks. Nice.

So this seems to be the going rate. Can't complain I suppose, given a 2L ICE and this heavy car. I'll be back to 55mpg doing local trips back home eventually.

That was days one and two. These are the results for days three and four that make up the second 500 mile of my trip to Lucca in NW Italy.

On day three with easing of the petrol situation in France, driving returned to sanity at 70-75 mph, ECO and comfort and Hybrid using Distronic, no Aircon, Result was 42mpg with electric miles again maintained at 1-3.

Day four, similar to three but driving in horrendous rain and traffic on the challenging ligurian coast road put it in Sport, Hybrid and Aircon ON. Result still 40-41 mpg AND electric miles increased at times to 6-8!

So, what do I think I have learned from all this - apart from the fun of the drive and admiration for the engineering of the car?

After this 1000+ mile drive, I don't think it matters a whole lot how you chose to set it up for a long drive without any base station charging as long as you are relaxed about the mpg within two or three. "Comfort" is all very well, but the car feels much livelier and happier in "Sport" even though the suspension was a little hard going over the ridges on the A26 and A12. Hybrid is best for nearly all situations unless you particularly want to interfere with the charging process for specific reasons.

As for the pronunciation of the French and Italian place names it is disgraceful that the COMAND system ever came to market in this condition and Mercedes should be ashamed - given that my previous 08 C-class had a much better system.

There may be a third report after the return trip in a couple of weeks - if there is anything useful to say.

You may do so sir. However given the failure mode of that area, perhaps dampening is also appropriate...

It's encouraging to see the car going so reliably over long distances. I shall now reconsider using mine, when the 3 week tour of Europe commences in August.

Do you have a roofbox on?

No, I do have the bars and box and did consider it, but because of the fuel situation in France decided not to in order to avoid the aerodynamic drag. But given that I drove so slowly it may not have been a severe penalty. The other factor is that I have the panoramic roof and the box would have affected the benefit of that. Given that there were only two of us, I just put the Estate in "flat-floor" configuration and loaded that way.

Whatever you do, enjoy the car with confidence and have a great time.

Finally got my c350e and what a car!

One question I have is when I open the car I want the LED lights to turn on straight away. This only happens at night automatically but is there any way of changing the settings so it does it during the day time too?

Could that be to do with the fact that you are in the Individual Drive mode on Agility Select and have an option chosen that does not allow E-Mode?

Good guess but no

I* mode is setup for Eco but with sport steering and suspension

I've had this occasionally before. Seems very random, mostly from startup. It will start on the engine and e-mode will be unavailable. No amount of mode selection will clear it, sometime a off/on will, other times after a bit of driving it will clear.
I guess it must be some list of check it performs and one of the sensors is occasionally giving a false signal?

In other news, just added my latest tank to my far to complex spreadsheet and now crossed over to over 40mpg average across 8000 miles. My last two tanks have been 48mpg and my current one is showing 55. The warm weather is a definite booster.
However as discussed before pure mpg is very misleading. If I drove 15 miles day, I'd never need to fill up!
My total cost per mile is averaging 12.5p/mile, but again the last two tanks have been 11.5.

My other half just got a F30 320d and its range and mpg put mine to shame. However the interior, kit and pace of the 350e are far superior.

I was talking with a colleague who has one. It can be all thing to all men. I can drive like a milkman during the week and save for a nice holiday, but if I pull up to a boy racer Corsa or I fancy a more interesting route home, put it in Sport+ and have lots of fun.

Car taken into my local dealer this morning.

Had the engine management light on which I thought was to do with charging. After a few days the light went out, but car would still not charge. Found out on Saturday it is the chargemaster unit that is faulty (so they are coming out on Thursday) but Merc suggested that I still take the car in to double check.
I hope that it was not the car that damaged the charger!!
only issue is that I have no car as they did not have any spare and I didn't want to wait 5 weeks.

Delivery next Wednesday! 8 months, 1 week and 3 days since the order was placed. What a wait.

Any bets what mpg the delivery driver will achieve?

I've had that happen, it was on a particularly wet day and the car just stopped going into e-mode (nor would it even switch the engine off when coasting). A day later, the car worked as normal again..

Ok thanks ... little strange though and worrying there's an under lying problem
