May I suggest that you mean "damping system"? The word derives from the term "dampers" that preceded "shock absorbers". The "damper" was something that reduced the rate of burn in a fire or furnace; and was adopted in mechanics to describe the energy absorbing component in a "spring/mass/damper" system.
"Dampening" means making something wetter; no water is used or needed in a shock absorber.
Hope you don't mind this post; I know I'm on a losing wicket with this one, but some changes are hard to accept as one gets older....
