Thats probably true about the gears (Although i'm assuming the petrol engine uses more fuel at low range too?).
On the upside, i managed to get home from work and back again on electric... Great for people 2-3 miles from work
Just got to wait for more chargers to be fitted at work. At the moment they are test ones and used mainly by the Trusts own electric cars. So its a shuffle about, borrow a card, walk here, pick car space, move car, move my car, and do it all in reverse after scenario.
Hopefully in a few months time they'll be 3 or four more spaces
(At least 5 of us will have hybrids)
I'm a little dismayed but not shocked that the electric range is based on guesswork and driving style, rather then a more decent approach at getting the max range. It seems again its more like the whole diesel emissions saga, where the range is based on non-real life tests so they can produce a figure for paperwork.
Saying that (And as pointed out above) - i did get 17 miles on EV last week, doing higher speeds and flipping in and out on hybrid - with a lot of coasting
