CL500 respray

Very, very nice indeed!

My local paint shop quoted me £335 for respraying just my rear bumper!

Woah, £200 for mine each, and I've just paid £200 for a pair of wings plus welding. Ask them for a cash in hand price: )

Excellent job !! Just need some sunshine to enjoy it.

Quick question ... I was tempted to do the same CAT bypass. I mentioned this mod at my MOT last week. I was told the car would of failed due to the number of CATs being reduced from standard.

How are you going to get it MOT'd in the future?

Cheers. I actually ended up taking it to a place in Oldham (near to where I work) which came highly recommended. Cost me £80 !!!

When picking it up the day after I was expecting an "okay" job (it had 2 areas of damage on it so I knew it would be an improvement) but the finish is excellent.

Result!

You can replace the light strip on the mirrors, they are a lot different, like the rear lights they just freshen up the car. I think £ 70.00 each from MB and they look great.

Thanks... I'll have a look....

The MOT man would have to know it had four cats to start with... mines a tame MOT tester and he doesn't ask too many questions... If it does fail I'll just replace them.... worth the gamble for the cheaper pipes if it's OK though....

Great job :thumb:

^ +1, totally amazing job!! Seriously impressive car to drive round in for a bargain price :)

Thanks chaps, I have been cruising about in it with a big grin.....:thumb:

Very sad but I find myself going outside just to look at it....

Anyone remember that american detective show years ago where he used to park his corvette in his front room?? Keep suggesting it to the mrs but she's having none of it!!!!!

I know exactly what you mean.

The CL 215 is one of the best looking iconic touring coupe Mercedes ever made IMHO of course. Absolutely stunning especially the rear window and rear quarter.

Combined with over 500 bhp and a Kompressor

I don't remember it but from Wiki:

Vega$ ... detective Dan Tanna, who drove around the streets of Las Vegas in a red 1957 Ford Thunderbird ...

Yeah thats the one... I knew it was a red american sportscar... Imagine what the health and safety bods would make of that today!!!!

Very nice job! Car looks great!

Do you mind in me asking where you got it resprayed?

What a fantastic job, bringing a car that was (let's be honest) pretty dreadful, back to what looks like 'as new' condition. You're quite right to be proud, and to find it difficult not to just stand and admire it. (I am much the same with my W215 to be honest. The shape is just sooo elegant.)

But more than that, MB fans owe you cumulative thanks for bringing this beautiful beast back to a condition that will hopefully keep it on the roads for a long time to come. Good work and very nicely done.

Latest job was to fix the aircon that was working fine till a lorry in front of me went over a big bump and chucked out loads of stones.... I was a fair distance behind and braked as soon as I saw the avalanche but it was too late... three chips in the nice new paint and two holes in the air con condenser...

First job was to remove the electric fan and shroud, only two screws and one elec plug and it lifts out

Then had to drain the water rad, some ham fisted idiot had snapped off the drain **** but it was easy enough to drain it through the bottom hose after taking the front undertrays off, then undo the two transmission cooler pipes from the rad, disconect the top hose, 5 screws later and the water rad was out, unscrew the ABC rad from the front of the aircon condenser and move it out the way, then disconnect the pipes from the power steering rad that is built into the top of the aircon rad. Another two pipes from the aircon and it was free... no need to have the system evacuated before hand as it had lost the lot...

You then end up with a big hole in the front of the car and various puddles underneath it where your drip tray has missed!! (I keep a bag of cement in the garage for oil spills, it's very good and getting it all up)

You can see the damage and the wet patches on the rad here...

Here is a new and old shot.... You can see that the power steering rad in the top is bigger in the new one

Have a leak and change the condenser and you should change the reciever/dryer at the same time, it's here on the CL (circled in red) Also noticed it was a bit wet on top of the power steering resevoir, the dip stick thingy has split it's rubber top and oil is splashing out so that's on the list for replacement as well....

It has two pipes in it which are held in with external torx bolts, so you need some torx sockets, it has two "O" rings on the pipes so be careful and keep everything clean, the "O" rings were in perfect condition and still very supple so I reused them, same as the ones on the condenser, The dryer just pulls out from underneath it's held in with a plastic clip, the pipes stop it dropping out the bottom.... Old and new dryers...

Assembly was a reverse of removal, bit fiddly getting the water rad side plastic trims in but not too bad...

I took the opportunity to change the coolant, I used some new 5 year coolant... Checked all the oil levels afterwards, didn't seem to lose very much gearbox oil but it did need about 3/4ltr of ABC power steering fluid to top up, far more than came out the old rad, I suppose this can only help the life of the oil..... took it for a drive to get nice and warm and then left it overnight to settle, checked for leaks the next day, checked the levels again and then took it to be gassed up... had it vacumed out for ages then filled with the correct weight of gas...

Its better than ever now... very cold...

Costs

Air Con Condenser & Reciever/dryer £129.48 delivered
ABC oil from Merc 1ltr £18 (robbing so and so's)
Antifreeze £20
Regas £45

So not too bad all in....

Great thread. I am looking at getting my C32 resprayed as there are too many stone chips plus the odd rust bubble. Seeing the finsihed product has inspired me to get this done sooner rather than later.

Great thread and what a bargain that respray was. I remember your thread when you got that Cat C Yaris and fixed it up on the Yaris Club and Toyota Owners Club.
