E Class sounds system upgrade retro fit questions

replys

Hi There,
I have spent hot elastic hour reading through your forum postings regarding your trials and tribulations regarding your car audio upgrades, really interesting and of immense use.

Glad its useful mate. Nice people on the forum.

I was hoping you could very kindly answer the following please:-
1 - Do you still experience the clunking noise from the amp / speakers? If not, how was this fixed?

There is no clunk, it was easily fixed with a small device for around £15 odd. Now there is a delay of launch which is what you also need.

2 - Where did Huets nstall the amp? I.e. boot, hidden somewhere?

Nope in a nice special area under the passenger footwell under the metal in its own cubby area. there are even spaces in the metal by standard to make your adjustments if necessary.

3 - Did you go for the HK sub in the parcel shelf? If so, we where did you buy from?

Nope on account of the HK sub being ****. Your best option and was my chosen one was to install a good sized sub free standing in the boot. OR if you want, Huets will remove the plastic behind your rear centre armrest and recover it with showroom felt then fire a sub cabinet into the car via that handy port. They would build a small enclosure and cover that with matching carpet and it is not noticeable. Note these guys have been doing this, same company since late 80s. They are pro boys at hiding **** and making it look factory. That said I bottled and went instead for a larger sub in the boot, and cut out the foam behind the grill in the rear parcel shelf. this creates air for the sub to reach inside the car. Whilst not perfect certainly is amazing.

4 - Would you still recommend the same upgrades today?

I would recommend would largely depend on what kind of music you are listening to - !!!!!!!! But yes I most definitely think this is quite a brilliant sound. Way better on 70 percent of songs than HK.

My personal gripe is one that Huets can help with - They fit a hidden controller for your sub power in the car in your **** pit, and I am forever adjusting it depending on tracks. For example a dance music track to an 80s track. One thing I have noticed is that HIP HOP and RNB don't tend to like my system. When you consider that these formats are over compressed these days to start with, and then you are adding a huge sub, I find it quite bad.

However and this is very important. My sub is not firing into the car. It is my theory and that Peter will comment, that if I were firing the the sub into the car directly, then the bass would be warmer, less would be needed and the whole sound will sound beautifully balanced. That being the case, I may go for a built enclosure myself with them.

If you are listening to one sort of music per journey then no adjustment need be made, For example Dire Straits album on a long drive… shakes the mirrors and warms the back of your neck. 80s disco on a hot day windows open needs again more bass etc etc. Oddly the type of music you listen to is vastly important if you want perfection.

The speakers in the front doors and rear doors cannot be upgraded without some thought, but they are excellent with the right amp - IE my amp. I would recommend however making sure ALL FOUR speakers in the car plus tweeters are powered by one amplifier and then add another amp to power the sub. I like sound filling the car not just the front, this ads to the overall warmth and absorption. The more the rear speaker are powered like the fronts the less noticeable the enormous bass is coming from the boot.

I demo'd Grace Jones slave to the Rhythm to three independent people and their mouths dropped open, saying they have never heard sound like it!!!!

5 - Did Huets take care and respect when working on your car, I.e. not scratching anything and being careful when pulling panels off etc?

Yep - they are very caring - been doing it hundreds of years with 500k cars and so on. No kids all men grown ups.

Big thanks in advance....

James - soon to be w212 owner for first time :-)

I am fresh E350 owner and have exactly the same problem with clunking subwoofer :(.
Can you remember about this device:
There is no clunk, it was easily fixed with a small device for around £15 odd. Now there is a delay of launch which is what you also need.

What exactly it was and where from you get this?

Sorry if this is a year old - the decent people will know who fit stereos, if they don't don't use them!! :) Yes its a time delay device.
