Formula One 2018 - General Thread

It’ll be interesting to see what happens if Danny Ric moves to Ferrari. He proved his pace against Seb when they were Team mates Red Bull.

However, I’m wondering if Sebs contract would allow anything other than No.1 driver?

I can't see DR moving to Ferrari to be a number 2 driver. I'd be very surprised if Bottas got to keep his seat so maybe an opening there for DR.

Guess who's having a bleat now about the timing of the safety car - that it should have been called 30 seconds earlier rather than just after he and VB passed the pit entry?? Yep, SV!!

Charlie Whiting's response was interesting. He basically said he's not interested in timing the safety car to ensure fair play to all as it's not his job. Given a safety car almost always ruins any chance of fair play in a race I think that's disappointing.

Sebastian Vettel blasts Safety Car timing - Charlie Whiting responds

It is not surprising at all. I am just surprised that it took this long. It was a "long" incident and (it appears) a slow call, in changing circumstances. So Charlie would have have a good long look at when he made the call. Conspiracy? Not at all and I do not read Seb or Ferrari as suggesting anything of the sort. What they are saying is that the timing/effectiveness of these calls should be looked at with a view to the fact that there is race going on and it is without doubt that any SC will have some impact on that race for some team/driver whatever their points position.

I think, like many? It falls under the umbrella that says the sport needs a good spring clean out with many of these types of incident having to to be reviewed for the first time in many years.

For those who like golf, you will note that this is happening now in golf. The recognition that has existed for many years, that the original rules were actually in danger of harming the sport's image and appeal is now staring to filter up. 2019 will see many sweeping changes in the rules, designed to improve the appeal and encourage a new generation into the sport as players and spectators. It is hoped, in the main, that we will the game speeding up and the endless need for rules officials to be present, to be greatly diminished. GOOD..

Times are changing, as is technology, expectations and desires. F1 needs to keep up or it will simply lose it's appeal and it's relevance.

The start of another F1 weekend :) I wonder if MV will finish a race ....

His FP1 lasted half an hour, if that helps you come to a decision :)

Watching the two practice sessions it's clear to me there will be many yellow flags and probably a few safety cars during the race, so track position and hence pole is even more important here than it usually is.

Well well well...

Lauda has just made a good point, asking why the marshalls hadn't cleared the debris, considering "the safety car went on for ever".

I didn't see that result coming. I can understand why Lewis wasn't jumping for joy at the win but then it makes up for Australia.

With regards to the Red Bulls - don't the rules disallow two moves?

Christian Horner is not a happy bunny.

I'd put that down to Verstappen, weaving in front of Riiiccccciarrrdiio. Watch the replays, MV makes a clear move right, back to the middle, then further left as DR makes his move. You may say DR could have braked harder and earlier but by the time MV had finished weaving DR had already committed to the move, and MV's car had taken the air and hence downforce from the following car.

As for the rest of the race, as predicted the spectators had plenty of time to admire the AMG GT as it paraded around the track.

One hour after the race has finished, a couple of drivers have been called into the headmaster's office for potential illegal use of DRS. That's pretty bad from the FIA, once the results have been published that should be it.

A lot of questions: Ocon or Raikkonen to blame on lap 1, why did the Red Bulls really take so long to get up to speed, was the battle between MV and DR one of the best we’ve seen for a long time, was their coming together inevitable after all that, was Grossjean texting when he lost it, how unlucky was Bottas? But the biggest question of all: has Kimi’s missus taken control of all the Raikkonen smiles? She never stops smiling and I don’t think he even knows how to.

No point in pushing the '2 move' rule as it only affected one team who retried both cars and drivers in a split second. No one else involved.

I have to chuckle when the AMG safety car comes out. It is being driven near the limit (not 100% as you can't risk crashing it) and behind it F1 cars are weaving all over the place while the drivers stifle yawns.

Just shows how far removed from our world F1 cars and their drivers are. Shame it does not always come over that way during the race.

Bit rich of the FIA considering the detection on zone 1 didn’t work properly.
