Anyone know if these things are armed, if they are showing nothing (in other words national speed limit applies)

Driving back from Knutsford today, noted an awful lot of people on the toll road going rather rapidly, and seemingly ignoring the cameras. If it did pop up with a Red Circle and a limit then they obeyed, but otherwise ignored.

Thoughts ?

Had a look into this a while ago. There are some bridges where the toll merges with another notorway and have cameras. These are not variable speed ones but enforce the relevant speed limit on display. No speed limit showing, nothing to enforce. I had a look at their type and came to that conclusion; they are flash operated so it would flash if it would get you.

I went through at 90+ so was worried. Did the research and indeed nothing came through the post. If no limit shows the cameras are not in operation. They will not flash.

God I hope not, I went through there rather too fast the other night and am sure by now I would have rcvd something through, probably inviting me to appear somewhere rather than a fixed penalty!!!!

So hopefully you are fine :thumb:

We have them here on the A14, simply change lanes before the next camera if you think you may have headed over the limit.

Still amazes me how people slam on brakes when they see them...

Doesn't work anymore, they did a sofware upgrade you can change lanes as many times as you want they will still get you. But you are right it's amazing peoples reaction to these who dont understand how they work

Surely that has to work re: the different lengths in lanes? eg on a 2 mile long bend one lane is far longer than the other...

Many times I have crept up to 80ish when on a virtually empty road for the best part of a mile and never been caught (touches wood)

Hi there,

I'm new here. I was travelling north today on M6 about 5pm ish. Approaching toll road where it says Variable Speed...I got the red discs light twice doing less than 80mph. Whhat should I expect? I've never seen this before and not been on the toll road for about 3 years.

Specs is not lane specific,if it's a motorway the camera in lane 1 will also capture lanes 2 & 3,likewise the camera above lane 2 will also cover lanes 1 & 3. Multiple cameras are used for corroboration.

Check this link out all will become clear

Its reminding you of the speed limit and that you are a transgressor.

The ones on the A14 arent like motorway ones, they dont have a camera above each lane. That said ive never tested the A14 ones, ive heard of too many people getting caught.

The M6 toll is pretty camera clear AFAIK as I know many who have shot down it at V8 speeds without any letters.

Pretty well every time I use the M6 Toll I see someone stopped by an unmarked Police car (usually a Volvo S60) so you're playing with fire if you exceed the limit by a wide margin.

I read on another forum that they've also started doing what has been common for years on the M4 Severn Bridge Toll and that is to laser speed check people as they enter the 50MPH area on the toll approaches.

Unless they are set to Zero Tollerance your allowed 10% for speedo error, plus speedo's normally are optimistic (I remember a early vectra was showing 70 when infact only doing just over 60).. so u should be ok at 80 (ish)

Sadly - I am now at the age that I'm quite happy poodling along the A14 at 67 mph..
