New Shell VPower Nitro + Launched

Surely colder, denser air is better?

Yes but cold engines use more fuel due to fuel enrichment being necessary for longer in the winter months. I'm not sure if many folks appreciate the fuel consumption figures of cold engines with all ancillaries going full blast.

So I think what developer215 was driving at was if you are going to launch a new " better"product this would be the time to do it to show it in its best light . It also helps this is the time people start getting out on the road for pleasure and possibly more likely to buy the stuff. If people think Shell spent thousands on researching this product in their technical labs don't think that they spent similar amounts of money on marketing it then it's being slightly naive. I guess we are lucky to have such a choice in this country provided you can afford it of course.;)

For diesel main issue is that whilst engines have become more complex following EU4 , EU5 etc diesel fuel standards have not really changed that much apart from lower sulphur content and of course the much derided biofuel content requirements.

Premium fuel offerings are based on mixing in a proportion of GTL (Gas to Liquid) produced fuel with a more highly refined base so it is a cleaner fuel (certainly looks lighter and does not stink as much as conventional diesel) and has a better detergent additives for the express purpose of keeping the injector nozzles clean, which is a critical requirement for current engines.

There some Cetane improvers in there as well.

My cars most definitely run better on it but as far as I can tell no better than conventional diesel with Millers Diesel Power additive.

In terms of petrol, my son has a 2.0 Ford Focus and that really likes the premium fuels: runs much better and gives about +2 mpg whilst conventional petrol + additive makes very little difference.

Is it worth it? Personal choice really.

The biggest difference I find, particularly with diesels, is how much smoother, quieter and easier starting they are as well as much better throttle response. Couldn't tell you if fuel consumption is any better or if it performs any better, don't really care it just FEELS better and given the small cost compared to the price of a car it's quite a cheap upgrade. Best way of describing it is similar to the difference between 4 cylinders and 6. If you do a lot of city driving with a diesel it also keeps your DPF etc nice and clean.

However, a lot of people are totally insensitive to these things so you're just wasting your breath with them! Some people drive around with a flat tyre and don't know it!

Fifth Gear did a dyno test some years back which proved that 'premium' fuels (petrol) did give a measurable increase in both bhp and torque on many cars. IIRC the only one where there was no significant difference was something like a 1.2 Clio.

Whether that increase is worth the extra cost of the fuel is entirely up to you.

I filled up at Shell yesterday and then did a 140 mile trip. If anything I thought the car felt a little slower. Checked the receipt today and it says Shell VPower Nitro +. Hmmm.

To me, it isn't.

But premium fuels also keep the fuel and intake system clean, and for me, that is worth it.

Which is why I only use premium fuels on both my cars.

No idea about performance, even if it was better I would not have noticed it on my C180K....

I had no option but to buy from Sainsburys the other day. The more expensive stuff. I must say (and I have never subscribed to this before) that the car drove awfully.

Just filled up the S3 tonight with nitro+supersteroidtestosteronefuel...yadda yadda

Will see if it makes any difference over time. I normally use tesco 99 with a couple of shots of forte fuel treatment every year.

I use Tesco 99 or Sainsburys SUL (98) and never noticed any difference between the 2.

Add to the fact that generally takes 2-3 tanks to clear out the old stuff and I am not sure how you can the difference? Placebo?

Only thing that I can think of is that it could have been an old batch of fuel that is losing is octane.

Yup that's why I use V Power in the SL.

I put it in my 2.8 Sharan when towing the caravan because the extra torque meant you could use 6th gear on the motorway (on standard fuel you had to use 5th unless going downhill). Also when we did the run to Germany because it consistently gave a bit more range from a tankful ... which made a '1 stop strategy' reasonably comfortable, rather than being rather tense!

But in normal mixed driving I very much doubt you'd have noticed the difference.

How can Berkshire to Germany not be a one stop drive?

Just filled up with Nitro, on my last trip I averaged 39.5 mpg (clk220 sport 2006) driving down to Watford from Halifax today will be interesting to see if there is any difference at all.

Will post here the results guys & girls.

South of Germany (far side of Leonberg) ... almost 600 miles. The Sharan had a range of about 350 miles.

That explains it. ;) I would do that in the first fill in any of my cars.

I filled up my car on Tue and it looks as though Nitro+ is replacing the previous V-Power as all pumps were selling Nitro+ only. There didn't seem to be any price increase so it probably means it won't have higher Octane or any magic dust :)

'...In comparison to our previous Shell V-Power Unleaded, we have rebalanced the formulation to contain 25% more Friction Modification Technology (FMT). This technology has been tested with Ferrari as part of our long standing technical partnership, and is designed to instantly reduce friction in critical engine areas and thereby help the engine to deliver more power to the wheels.'

Morning...

Please excuse my ignorance on the matter but I have a couple of questions regarding this new fuel.

I drive a 1991 300CE (M103).

1. can my car adapt to higher octane fuel such as this 99 RON Nitro +?
2. Will the addatives that clean the fuel system help me or cause problems with corrosion of seals etc?
3. Will the detergents used remove deposits and cuse problems or will it help performance.

I have always shyed away from using flushing/cleaning agents in the past with old engines as I have been warned can do more damage than good.

I have only had my W124 for about 1 month, and only used standard 95 RON.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!...

I generally use sainsburys as that is the nearest garage to me but I have filled up with shells v-power for the last 2 tanks. Any difference? Nah, nothing, not a sausage, still pulls like a train, roars like an angry lion and drinks like Oliver Reed.

I just have a couple of quid less in my pocket.

Wait for a few thousand miles till the dirt builds up in your fuel tank and engine then I'm sure you will notice it :)

Hey bud :thumb:

What do mean?
Do you not think much of this nitro stuff?
