On average how long do you keep your car for?

Please vote :)

edit: oops made an error with the poll options. There's a gap of 4-5 years. Oh well.
Admins: if you're feeling generous please edit option 4 to read 2-5 years. Thanks.

In 35 years of car ownership/keepership I've had 17 cars...so a very little over 2 years .

In 29 years of car ownership/keepership I've had 14 cars... so 7.25 years on average.

Longest kept is 27 years (and counting), shortest was six months.

OK.

So what have you had for 27 years?

I am on my 63rd 64th car. Passed my driving test for cars aged 20, thats 40 years of driving. Worthy of note is that at times I have had more than one car. Also had several motor bikes and a trike.

When i buy a car I hope that I have made the right choice first time. Because I know if I haven't. Then I'm stuck with it for a number of years before I can afford to replace it with another.

So I tend to think carefully before putting my signature on to the dotted line.

As Morrissey once sang;

"Six months is a long time" :)

The power of statistics

50+ cars in 40 years of driving, including owing 2 or 3 at a time. Ones I like a year or so, otherwise a couple of months.

Longest I've owned a car is 4 years 8 months, my current SLK. My C320 I've had 9 months, and I suspect I'll change that in the next 3 to 6 months. Probably:)

I tend to buy what I know I'll be content with, often spending more to get the right model and specification. This works well for me.

The last three to leave are:

S210 320CDI - 4years.

Sprinter 313CDI - 7.5 years.

Vauxhall Omega 3.0 Elite - 11 Years.

I'm more than happy with my Vito 120 sport (shame about the rust though) and can't envisage selling it within the next 10 years.

Until 1989 (that cheerful stock-market incident...) a year, two at most. Then

Rolls Royce Silver Spirit 2 for 6 years
Mercedes 560SEC for 3 years (bought at 6 years old, somehow piston rings went after just 9 years so sold it on after threats people would report me to environmental health due to the almighty smoke clouds)
Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Limited for 8 years (bought at 1 year old for £16000, sold for £800 with failed ECU and resultant knackered engine)
Mercedes C200 for 4 years (bought at 8 years old for £2000, common W202 ECU failure, sold for £350)
Mercedes E220 for 5 years (bought at 11 years old for £1500, got too rusty, sold for £1000)
Mercedes S320L current (bought at 14 years old for £1100)

Tend to keep mine a long time. Currently CLK 9 years, SLK 7 years, 124 only 3 years. Longest so far was a BMW E28 which I had for 13 years. Shortest was an early 203 which was so unreliable it had to go.

In 35 years of car ownership/keepership I've had 17 cars...so a very little over 2 years .

In 35 years of motoring i have had 24 cars so similar to above
ive had some nice ones :D...and some not so nice

given that one or two were short lived and one or two were additional cars
i'd say "just under two years"

in 29 years I have had 9 cars.
The longest time was a Citron zx td. 9 years
Mercedes since 2003

I used to drive a lot more on business than I do now so was having to change my car every 18 months or less.

When I bought my last car (the 335D) I thought I would keep it for 2 years and then change. I liked it so much I ended up keeping it for 4 years and 80,000 miles.

Somehow I can't see me keeping the current car for that long. Indeed I shudder to think the state it will be in after 4 years and 80,000 miles.
