Ordered a Skoda today!!

maddog, I can understand you reasoning. I'm not sure I would buy a Superb because of the styling, (personal preference) and due to being a stretched Octavia it has long overhangs and not so long wheelbase, but as long as it drives as you want it to, then I think is a good choice.
It will be reliable, comfortable has plenty of toys is big and will hold it's value better than any other VAG brand.

I think you might call that sensible and practical...err..sort of what the Skoda brand is meant to be all about..

The new Superb isn't based on the A5 Octavia platform.

All this talk of defecting to Skoda or Licksarse is bemusing. Skoda is what it is, a cheaper VW. There's not a massive difference, reliability and performance is good but it's the intangibles, trim quality, feel (there isn't a front drive car in the world that feels right after driving a rear driver), ride quality etc.

As for Lexus - the only GS I've driven is the 450h, which was impressive only for one thing - it went like stink while doing 30mpg (and I mean, really, went). Ugly outside, cheap inside, clever drivetrain.

As a utilitarian transport device a Skoda is as good as a Rolls Royce. But based on that criteria it's better than a Zonda, which is of course not true.

Good luck with the Skoda, I'm sure it will be safe, robust and dependable, but as someone who bought an S40 because it made sense I'll be the first to say "I told you so" when you're bored of it.

BTW - are you sure the superb is bigger than an S in the back?

It is bigger than an W221 in the back and it's a fraction longer than the W211 but a touch narrower.

The Superb is a nice car and excellent value for money. Go and see for yourself! Only downside with the Superb is the lack of a V6 diesel really.

I thought this one was, but checked again and see it is the Passat floorpan after all with Octy suspension.
The longer frontal overhang is due to the longitudal mounted engine, which is good fro refinement.

Just using whatcar's comparison thingy...

Base spec vs base 5 and base E - so that's a 1.4TSi, 520d and E200K.

Skoda is shortest, narrowest and lowest. BMW has most front headroom, E has most front legroom, BMW has most rear headroom with E and Skoda matching, but the Skoda hammers them both on rear legroom. BMW has smallest boot, but what surprises me most is how have Skoda trimmed so much weight away? 1425kg, bmw 1545, E 1570...

Real life costs have an advantage of being over 10 grand cheaper than the others to buy...

Big change comes when you swap to 170bhp diesels - 2.0 skoda, 520d, E220CDI... the "real" cost over three years is much narrower in difference - 16309 (skoda) 18404 (bmw) 20368 (E), and judging by the differences in top speed for such similar sized and powered cars I guess the aerodynamics of the superb suck.

Current passat is transverse, previous one was longitudonal.

I'm sure the new Superb is longer than the 5 series and the e-class. I'll check when I'm at work tommorow. Think we've got a 03 plate E220CDi coming in tommorow or Friday against a new Superb, I'll measure them up and compare them side by side.

Compare the Superb Elegance with satnav, bi-xenons, heated leather, electric seats, cruise, auto-wipers, parking sensors, 18" alloys, with a similary spec'd 520d or E220CDi and I think the difference in cost over 3 years widens.

I'm not saying the E-class is a bad car, I just hope you guys can appreciate the Superb for the good car it is. Don't compare to a W211 in your mind compare it to it's true competitors.

What would you rather drive a Citroen C5 or the Skoda?

No competition there I'm afraid, I've declined rental cars for being French. If I needed to buy a brand new 4 door saloon car with a diesel engine for 19 grand it'd probably be an Insignia.

3 yrs, 30k.

The difference between Skoda Elegance and BMW SE aren't as far apart as I thought. Is SE the top spec model?

Just spec'd up a E220CDi to as close to the spec of the Superb Elegance as I could and the Skoda is £24,054 and the E220CDi is £38,114.

I think in terms of cost the Superb is more in competition to the C-Class, but most C-Class buyers are going to be put off by the Superbs size I guess.

Hi all,

I previously went from an '04 E220 CDI Elegance to a new '07 VW Passat (2.0tdi 170hp, DSG, leather and lots of options). I loved the E class, but I wanted more power than the 220 could muster and the bigger engines are very expensive to run in Ireland - tax, insurance etc... Annual road tax on a 3.0 litre is currently around 1250 euro, emissions-based rates only apply to new cars from July 2008...But I digress, back to marque changing!

The various VW options were also a lot cheaper to add than on MB or BMW new cars - e.g. leather, heated seats, folding mirrors etc.

The VW family satnav - VW's RNS510 and Skoda's Columbus are the same device as far as I can tell - is a lovely thing to use, especially the touchscreen and the built-in HDD.

And depreciation, while comparable across marques on a percentage basis, was a lot lower because the cost price was lower.

However, while it was a great car and served me well, I changed back to Merc after a year because I got a good deal on an E320cdi - no shortage of power now!

The two reasons I switched back are, quite simply:
1 - that intangible but very real feeling of "oh yes" that I just don't get outside the E class...
2 - rear wheel drive!
There probably is a certain snob factor if I'm honest, but it's more about the power than anything...

Anyway, as mentioned, best of luck and many happy and safe miles of motoring to maddog and to everyone else!

Cheers,
Eddie.

I have to say i'm not here to try and convince anyone to buy a Skoda , the fact is if i had better dealers around here i would probably keep my W210 an extra couple of years but i dont expect for a minute to convince anyone on a MB "fanboy" site that a Skoda is as good a spec yet 1/2 the price and offers an interesting alternative

A lot of the criticsm on the Skoda brand is outdated and ill informed. Its a case of sitting in an ivory tower and a few people need to take a step back i feel , i had the same when i bought my W210 , the W124 crowd would harp on about how much better their cars were and whilst they had a point there were in the most part running around in bangers and some W210's are bangers today , sure there are good ones just like some very good W124's but they are in the same crux as the W124's were back in 2001

Everybody's situation is different and a badge is really important for some , i consider myself a petrolhead first and foremost , i can drive any car and take some enjoyment from it and i really dont care what people think , i dont need to flatter my ego , i drive a Skyline FFS , most people think i'm a chav!!!:)

I buy my cars cash , i dont finance them at all and certainly wouldnt pcp them as i change my cars ideally every 5 years , perhaps longer depending on personal circumstances

As for the Superb, I have to agree on the styling but then i dont see any of the more mundane MB being pretty cars i'm not keen on most modern cars , i really wasnt really that keen on the E class when i bought it , it looked bug'eyed to me and it kinda grew on me over time, hoping the Superb will do the same

The Superb only has a longer front overhang , rear is shorter than my E class , wheelbase is sorter than my E class and overall length is shorter than my E Class (1mm!!)

And yes i'm sure the legroom and boot size is better in the Superb than even an S class , thats important as i have a 9 yr old who is already over
5ft and i'm 6'1" myself

As for the old FWD/RWD argument i am firmly in the rwd camp for drivers cars , big luxo barges like the E Class, S Class etc arent drivers cars so i really dont think it makes any difference , these cars are unwieldy and supertanker like on the road.

The handling on the Superb isnt as predictable as the E class though , the car tips into corners very differently but traction is better and body roll is a lot less

This car isnt there to give me my jollys I have a fun RWD car that IS a drivers car and is good on both the track and road.

Traction in the recent poor weather was not an issue at all in the Superb , wheras it took my 5 minutes to get my E class out of the dealers parking space and it wasnt easy on the road and getting back on my drive that the Skoda had done without fuss needed a dramatic run up in my Merc

I have to say the performance difference (ojmnbetween the 170hp (and heavier) Skoda compared to the 197hp E 320 cdi isnt much , top speed is about 10mph different but i'm not had a car flat out for about 15 years , not going to start now but then the extra torque the e class has makes it
feel faster

i'm hoping i wont miss the performance too much but i know my E class makes good power , i find out how much today hopefully
