Paddle Shifters... Thoughts?

No Mercedes is just paddles (except Lewis's)

The SLK55 isn't just paddles is it? #panic haha!!

Not quite sure what your CLC offers transmission mode wise, but the SLK55 has C (controlled efficiency or comfort as some of the dealers call it here), S (sport) and M (manual).

The C and S modes are automatic with the S mode providing a more sporty drive (holding gears longer etc.)

The M mode is manual whereby you change gear via the paddles although the car will override your input if it 'feels' the gear change is 'inappropriate'.

You can also use the paddles in the automatic modes to hold gears etc.

..

What I couldn't understand was twice when I was changing down from third to second, just as I pulled it to change down, it automatically did it for me so effectively went straight into first... Jolting hell haha!! Still a bit confused as to why it does it for you when I have auto that does that but then it suppose it has to a certain extent so not to destroy the gearbox or transmission.

Good to hear you are getting on well with the paddles :thumb:

Regarding the car changing down gears automatically,
Yes, the car will change down gears when the revs drop to around 1900rpm. Presumably to prevent stalling.

Equally, the car will not allow you to change up a gear if it would mean the revs are too low in the higher gear.

Basically, manual mode is more of an override, rather than a true manual gear box.
But that's not to say it's a bad thing because it is always there, assisting you, if you like.

Morning all, my first post on here.

Was reading a bit about this, I've had my C250 CDI for 6 months now, love the auto, so lazy!

I've had a play with the paddles more than a few times and I have to say I did expect them to react differently to my first expectations of them. So I did have a geeky flick through the manual to understand my 'wtf's'.

The left hold down is what I use most when moving, also a left tap when at lights for a pull away in 1st.

The interesting (annoying) bit on the gearboxes that are not AMG (C63 etc) is that you don't select a gear per se, but 'request' the range of gears to be used. In the AMG, manual is pretty much that, so you can red-line it if you want (need clarification there)
But in the others, when it shows you a 'gear' number on the display, that is just the highest gear that you request to be used. The car will decide on the best gear in that range UNTIL you keep accelerating to a point when the car says no and increases the range. So it works for changing down but not shifting up.

So I will put it into sport, and either drop it down (hold) before a bend/roundabout/av it moment but I let it change up when it needs to.

Once I realised that, it at least made some sense as to what I thought I could get the car to do and when I wanted to do it. Still prefer it to a manual and I never thought I would say that.

*HAIRY MOMENT*

Took it out in the rain (Still not cleaned!!) and held the 'down' paddle in sport auto and it went mental, went from 30mph to first gear and almost stopped... Panic stations all round but I quickly flipped it back up the gears and it changed back to normal sport mode. Practice really does make perfect but the potential with these paddle things is enormous... I'm all over this when the weather is drier. Love love love it... :) x

lol

You'll work out the revs to change down at when you're utilising engine braking, so you don't over-rev the engine (and do what you did :D).

But if you're wanting to change down gears in preparation for a sprint or overtake, leave your throttle foot where it is and keep the application static.

It's funny reading you get to grips with it :D

I think if I'm going to do it, I'll keep it in manual until I know what I'm doing as I've mastered that... Just didn't expect that to happen in sport mode to be honest lol x

You pair are just girls... They don't die in the rain haha ;) x

Whoa whoa whoa...
What the....?!

I was just starting to like you! ;)
I'm guessing you don't want to hear about me not using water to clean my car then...

Hahaha... What do you use? Butter and olive oil? ;)

Cant get on with the buttons so looking at changing to paddles. Trouble is the cost. To do it by changing the wheel costs about £800 as you need to buy an adaptor as well. Not sure it will be worth it.

... You'd have to teach me how to do it too!! ;)

Only the chosen few can be shown....
Only the chosen few can learn the ways....of the freak.

lol
