Personalised Number Plates

Ok i'll argue back, because i want this to get interesting.

Why did i paint my callipers? They look good, and guess what? i cant donate any of that money to charity because the paint was FREE and it was a painless 30 minute job.

Why did i buy my Brabus alloys? Well ok that might be seen as a waste of money... but when you compare them to the 17 inch 225/45/17 tyres/alloys i had on before, you can see why i bought them:

A) MUCH more grip and MUCH better handling, extremely noticeable increase of traction off the line as well. (255/35/18)
B) They actually do much more for a car than a bunch of numbers on a plate.
C) and they look sexxxxxxyyyyyyy!
:)

And on another note to people say about why buy a mercedes, well actually i bought my first merc for £1000 from an auction. There are fiestas more expensive than this, and they aren't even half as good.

Second, the car i have at the moment was £2800 when i bought it, with 60k miles. Money wise thats penautscompared to what other people spend on their cars, and its also penauts when compared to how much i earn (not trying to brag here, just trying to show i haven't spent a fortune on my car).

Please dont talk to me about buying a different car, i have a family of 5, 4 of which depend on my income, and i need a big car, i would get an estate but i really cant stand them and i'm still too young for that!. But i also want to have fun while i'm still young so i went up from my c200 to a c230 kompressor. And i've done a few things to the C230 to make it slightly quicker and better handling, because i enjoy that type of thing!
There are three reasons why your argument is flawed. One persons Alloy/Mods is another persons Number plate:rolleyes:

Not trying to say that having a personalised plate is wrong guys, on the contrary, i'm just saying i dont agree with it, thats all. I hope this is all just healthy debate and nothing more :).

Adam

You just had to go and post that disclaimer whilst I was replying to you didn't you:o

Thats great Rage.

i wish you well in everything you do...

red caliber paint for free.. 30 mins painting them.. that time could have been given to a good cause lol

plates... Bobby... very true, ive been identified by peeps and got caught out by my partner, when i said i was at a friends place having dinner, but actually was at nandos down the road with him, so yikes..i need to go into iding.

you chose to paint the calipers for the same reason people have a personal plate. They serve no purpose but for looks.

wheels are also the same; you got them for the same reason people put plate on their car. You say they look sexy, some people would say a good personal plate finishes the car off just as well.

There are three reasons why your argument is flawed. One persons Alloy/Mods is another persons Number plate:rolleyes:

its not! the alloys i had before were absolutely ruined, and quite badly damage, and it would've cost me £75 per wheel to put right which means spending £300. AND it was due for new tyres (because i've driven them a year and even one of them popped on the motorway!).

So i thought, instead of spending £300 on a refurb, and then a further £100 per tyre (decent tyres) = £400, which means £700 to get this all sorted, why not get a new set of wheels ?

And i got the genuine brabus ones for £935 all in. Ok i spent £235 more, but thats money i had to 'waste' :).

Thats slightly hypocritical for me to say i know, but the only reason i say it is because i personally feel alloys do alot mroe for a car than a set of number plates.

But thats just my opinion!

I wonder what sort of person would have fancy alloys and a private plate?

Thinking about why I - and I suspect others - are picking up on things like painted calipers, wheels, etc is because you said:

Private plates are just a show of wallet size. Absolutely pointless and attention seeking. And pathetic.

Quite strong words. So I said:

Just like driving a Merc. ;)

And your answer was:

No. Thats wrong.

So it's not really a surprise that people pick up on flaws in your argument, just politely pointing out that it's all relative - you like stuff, other people like other stuff, and that's OK.

mactech.. not forgetting the kind of person with the painted calibers.. maybe they can paint on a prancing Horse for added authenticity lol ;)

that £235 could have gone to charity!

Seriously, i agree with what BD says in post 67.

Quite a strong statement on a forum where i suspect many have the luxurys of a personal plate is bound to cause a bit of an argument.

I suspect it will be someone who enjoys cars.
Probably Mercedes cars.
And that's why we are all here on the forum....:D

Yeah i mainly said that to spark up an arguement :). And it then reveals how arrogant people really are, or it will also reveal how well-balanced and mature people are ie. the ones who didnt start (almost) insulting my car, and were trying to prove a point, against the ones who say things like:

"maybe they can paint on a prancing Horse for added authenticity lol
wink.gif
"

"My plate is worth 60k"

Etc.

I completely agree with what Bobby Dazzler said, its the way i said it that p33d people off... but sometimes it has to be done so you can see what people really think :).

It's nearly Christmas .... everyone take a chill pill , season of goodwill and all that ? ;)

Why wind people up ? who cares what people really think ?

You like your car don't you ? that's all that matters ....

I've got small wheels , painted calipers and a personal plate , what does that make me ? :)

strange

I mainly wanted to see if anyone could come up with a very good arguement to actually buy a private number plate. And the best message i got was (from bobby dazzler again):

Might the reason that you think it's a complete waste of money because you don't associate any value with a personalised plate for your own car, and have no wish to profit from them.

And i remember someone else saying something along the lines of "Plates on one's car is like alloys is to yours" or something like that (i'm not saying it very well), but i hope you all know what i mean.

Those are the valid statements that i myself will take out from this debate and i rest my case there :).

Gotta say , personally i think a private plate 'finishes' the car off ...

I never view a car as mine until my transfer has gone through , had my plate since i was 17 .... it just makes the car 'mine' ... it's hard to explain.

Wheelie challenged?:D

Private plates are just a show of wallet size. Absolutely pointless and attention seeking. And pathetic.

Buying a Mercerdes is surely much more of a statement about one's wallet size than buying a cheap number plate. There are benefits other than 'status': dateless or very old plates hide the age of the car; it stands out from the crowd if you are driving a popular model; and it's much easier to remember if it's memorable! :D

Oops! It seems I missed a whole chunk of this thread while reading it, so ignore the above.

I have a few number plates 'for investment' which I bought just before the credit crunch (not smart, with hindsight). They are:

S123 XXL (SIZE XXL)
GR06 CER (obvious, I hope!)
K155 MY S (KISS MY ASS)
M8 ECL (MB E-CLass)
L3 NDG (Mrs Marque's initials)

I may have to keep them for a few years to see a return!

for the record, i never said

"my plate is worth £69k"

if you were refferring to me.

I did acknowldge the my plate is for sale, and this is the price i have it advertised at, but in way bragged or in any way, sort of form (legal notice lol) indicated the valuation of my plate, simply what i would like to achieve on it over the coming years..

As per the prancing horse, not actually directed to you, but generally speaking in terms of the comment about imagine a person with a private plate, and alloys, and i added painted calipers and the prancing horse, u have neither the plate nor the horse, so why would u preseume i am arrogant or even directing my comment to you.

Anyhow, i am off into town this evening, to enjoy some Ping Pong.

have a great evening chaps

For whose benefit?
