For whose benefit?
In business, I have to deal with company directors who have a new car every two years. They were not impressed with my 9-year-old Toyota even though everything worked fine and it was comfortable. Solution: get a new-ish Mercedes and stick a private plate on it to hide the fact that it will be six or seven years old before I even think about replacing it.
Standing out from the crowd: this doesn't apply to me, but I imagine that a guy turning up at the golf club in a BMW 3-series would find it hard to remember which one was his. A private plate also says, "This is MY car, not a company wagon!"
