Personalised Number Plates

My Dad bought '12 Guy' as a drunken dinner party bet years ago when you had to buy the car as well as the plate. At that time he owned a garage so bought the car changed the plates and sold the car for the same as he bought it for. So if that shows the size of his wallet then he is worth about Zero.......Actually not far off the mark then Rage:o

Hi Rage - would love to disagree lol

they are a show of wallet size, but also on a purposeful stance, privacy dictated by not revealing the age of ones car.

Also, on asset value, some have increased more so than any other investment vehicle, be is property, land, equity, stocks and shares and even speculative gains on commodity trading.

Investments for sure, if bought right.

Plates are also for peeps who are attention seeking true, but this is quite rare.

A customer might put on aprivate plate so as if they are on a motorway, and some one sees a their car - say a Maybach with the area code in the first 2 letters of the new style plate, it could be a saftey issue too to not disclose their location in the country for would be theieves etc

Private plates are just a show of wallet size. Absolutely pointless and attention seeking. And pathetic.

Feel free to disagree :)

Just like driving a Merc. ;)

PS I disagree too.

Free to disagree ?

Some would say it costs £60K to disagree......

I have one on my works van which has the company initials (H6 SAS) Bought it off Ebay with the car for £400. Sold the car on and kept the plate. Worth alot more than that now!
Got another "fun plate" B 13ALD!

No. Thats wrong.

To add: The reason i find private number plates a complete waste of money is because:

A) It doesn't directly do anything to your car.
B) You could use that money to donate to charity or even just keep it in your wallet.
C) I dont see whats wrong with the standard plate, shows the age of the car and is unique.
D) Opportunity for DVLA to make money (and people funnily enough fall into that trap).
E) whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy oh whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy do you have to try and seperate yourself from all the other drivers with a different plate? WHY? :)

Oh... and you are easier to distinguish... your plate can be memorised alot easier incase someone wanted to track you (That might be my paranoid psycho side speaking) but still a valid point none-the-less!

yes valid.. lol

um DVLA dont generally make much on transfer of plates, only new issues.

standard plates are nice... if you get a good one.

My father got E320 MYX when he bought his car in 1987 - standard plate - thats not bad for a car that was an 320e model

you could say the same about any luxury item, which a private plate is. Its down to personal choice. Whether anyone else likes it or not i couldnt give a chuff. IMHO of course!!

I think a nice plate does wonders for the look of a car.

RAGE - i see you have painted red brake calipers - why did you paint them? they dont serve any purpose and you could of donated the money to charity. its the same thing.

Rage, a similar point could also be raised about why buy a benz when you can buy a ford fiesta. They both do the same job and the money u save on a ford fiesta could be given to charity, Jeremy clarkson back in 98 thought that fiesta is everything u need in a car.. hmmmm

A standard car is unique enough, buying a mercedes is a premium brand.. u pay somewhat for the star on the bonnet is that not true?

Mercedes cars also are a low volume premium brand, not for the masses, so if you really if you dont want to seperate yourself from other drivers, surely mercedes would not be in your portfolio of cars ;) lol

I got switched onto plates by my very first girlfriend's father who bought MDM 1 (his initials) back in 1968 for £250. As an antique dealer he had an eye for a bargin and he sold it 30 years later for over £50k!
I have few, V2 AKM (my initials) is on my V-twin Aprilia.
My wife has a VAL plate as that's her name and I have P1 TEK on the S class as I work in Motorsport, it covers the age of the car and gives the car a less cluttered look.
Not expecting to make money with any of these, but I don't think I'll be out of pocket if and when they do go and (importantly!) I will have had fun:D

I agree - it's no more vain than putting apair of silly wheels or having red brake calipers on your car - an often can be a lot less cash too (which of course you coudl always donate to charity)

No. Thats wrong.

As is very often the case. Just ask Mrs D.

I think others have already countered with the obvious comments.

Might the reason that you think it's a complete waste of money because you don't associate any value with a personalised plate for your own car, and have no wish to profit from them. It doesn't make me, or anyone else wrong though.

You have a point though, regarding being easier to distinguish. In so many ways I'm a very private person, and prefer to remain as anonymous as possible, but a personalised plate doesn't fit with that. People do notice mine, but I can live with it.

For a bit of fun:

To add: The reason i find fitting replacement alloy wheels a complete waste of money is because:

A) It doesn't directly do anything to your car.
B) You could use that money to donate to charity or even just keep it in your wallet.
C) I dont see whats wrong with the standard wheels.
D) Opportunity for the wheel industry to make money (and people funnily enough fall into that trap).
E) whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy oh whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy do you have to try and seperate yourself from all the other drivers with a different set of wheels? WHY? :)

Ok i'll argue back, because i want this to get interesting.

Why did i paint my callipers? They look good, and guess what? i cant donate any of that money to charity because the paint was FREE and it was a painless 30 minute job.

Why did i buy my Brabus alloys? Well ok that might be seen as a waste of money... but when you compare them to the 17 inch 225/45/17 tyres/alloys i had on before, you can see why i bought them:

A) MUCH more grip and MUCH better handling, extremely noticeable increase of traction off the line as well. (255/35/18)
B) They actually do much more for a car than a bunch of numbers on a plate.
C) and they look sexxxxxxyyyyyyy! :)

And on another note to people say about why buy a mercedes, well actually i bought my first merc for £1000 from an auction. There are fiestas more expensive than this, and they aren't even half as good. it was a beautiful problem-free relaxing car to drive, did its job extremely well for its value, and i p/x'ed it 2 years later with 80k miles MORE on it for exactly the same price i got it for.

Second, the car i have at the moment was £2800 when i bought it, with 60k miles. Money wise thats penauts compared to what other people spend on their cars, and its also penauts when compared to how much i earn (not trying to brag here, just trying to show i haven't spent a fortune on my car).

Please dont talk to me about buying a different car, i have a family of 5, 4 of which depend on my income, and i need a big car, i would get an estate but i really cant stand them and i'm still too young for that!. But i also want to have fun while i'm still young so i went up from my c200 to a c230 kompressor. And i've done a few things to the C230 to make it slightly quicker and better handling, because i enjoy that type of thing!

Not trying to say that having a personalised plate is wrong guys, on the contrary, i'm just saying i dont agree with it, thats all. I hope this is all just healthy debate and nothing more :).
