A friend of mine took his girlfriends Y reg SLK into Mercedes Cheltenham and Gloucester dealership for some rust repairs, when he got there he was told to take it to a body shop in Cheltenham (not a Mercedes body shop) which was surprising to say the least.

He did not buy the car from Mercedes but it has full MB history and is a half handy car, what shocked me was the loan car he had. Not a Mercedes which is fair enough but you would expect a little Corsa or KA at the very least not a R reg Micra! WTF!!!!!!!

Is this right????? or are Mercedes cutting corners on these rust repairs?

Didn't know the SLK had rust problems.

My neighbour recently bought an 02 reg E320, it's been gone for over a week now and in its place is a Smart ForFour with "M-B Body Shop" painted on the back :)

PS I would rather have an R reg Micra than a Corsa, any day!

I think that there is lots of rust around the boot handle.

I think the excess on his insurance is worth more than the Micra

We had a P reg Micra as a daily runaround until a couple of years ago and it was excellent. Totally reliable, nippy, economical ... couldn't fault it really. I got a brand new Polo diesel from VW as a courtesy car and it was horrible in comparison (apart from the kudos etc. of having a new model to drive around in ... which is presumably the issue here?).

I would of thought as with most car repair companied you have a few year old car, especialy as it is a waranty issue.

To be honest there is nothing like driving an old banger! me and my firend in question drove a 1989 Maestro from Gloucester to Naples (through the alps), back up to Rome where i flew home and my friends girlfriend flew our and they drove it back via the south of france.

Not bad for a £80 motor! only modifications were some stickers see link below

i bet no rust on the micra lol lol

Yup ours didn't have a speck on it when I sold it to a mate for his daughter to drive.

My 2003 SLK is going to the body shop for corrosion around the boot handle to be fixed under warranty:

The paint has begun to blister and flake off - it's worse now than when I took the photo a week or so ago.

I expect I'll get a Ford Ka or something for the day or so they'll need it.

Same as mine 2001 model discovered a couple of weeks ago. I guess I neglected washing off the salt after the winter. Very easy to overlook. Or maybe the loosen boot opener rub against it.

According to another website, this is a known issue with the R170 caused by overtightening of the boot release assembly during construction. This breaks the paint surface and allows corrosion to start.

The dealer didn't like to admit that it was a known fault though!

Unlucky m8 !!!
Your gonna cry when u read this.
My 2000 CLK 55 Went in last week for rust issues on all 4 wheel arches.
They have supplied a replacement not a bad little runner.
A 2008 C200 Elegance CDI (with only 3k miles on the clock)
Not a bad little runner nice spec too Leather , parking sensors, bluetooth phone connection etc
Best bit is that merc wanted £10 + vat a day to insure it.
Phoned my insurance company they said an extra £25 any i could drive it on mine, not too bad.
So all in all a big thumbs up to Merc of Chester.

Be thankful you did not get a Daewoo Matiz death trap: my wife got one as an MB loan car. She does care much about cars but in her words itwas the worst car she had ever driven.

Out of interest, do you know the name of the bodyshop in Cheltenham it went to?

Well, the car went in first thing yesterday and I've just collected it looking as good as new. Whilst it was in being sorted, the bodywork place lent me a 2007 reg Vauxhall Corsa. Surprisingly large for a 'small car'.

This warranty paint repair won't have been cheap for M-B - the chap at the body shop told me that they have to remove the badges in order to spray the treated panel, then fit 3 new badges: SLK32, Mercedes and the ///AMG badge. Cost of the ///AMG badge alone is nearly £40!

They also gave it a complimentary valeting.

All in all, excellent service from Liam Kenny of Eynsham, British West Oxfordshire!

After I got home, I noticed a mark on the roof which wasn't there when I took the car in. It looks like a blob of adhesive, lacquer or somesuch...and had set rock hard as it defied very hot water, bug cleaner or tar remover. I didn't want to try anything else!

So I popped round to Eynsham first thing today and had a word with them. They agreed to sort it out for me and will give me a loan car for the overnight stay it will need. And it will all be free of charge.

That's the sort of old-fashioned service it's all too rare to come across these days!

Viewed one of that vintage at a MB dealer a couple of years ago. Also had rust around the wheel arches on the inner edge of the metal.
Seemed to lack either galvanising or protection of the metal edge by a wheel arch liner.

My 52 slk320 has also been in for the rust around the boot handle and the car we got was a c220 diesel about 8k on the clock.
V pleased with the repair and the car was washed and valeted too.
