Today I swapped my Sport 'wheel for a four spoke (from bigmacplease).

Both cars had their battery disconnected...

After eventually getting the airbag connectors off (they were STIFF!! ) we disconnected the button connectors only to find they were different shapes.

The wires were identical in colour and position within the connectors, so we swapped connector shells as well.

Wheels back on, airbags connected, button connectors fitted, ignition on.... NO error messages! :) :bannana:

Also no action in the button department! :o Steering wheel buttons on both cars totally inoperative...

Anyone have any ideas??

Sorry that I cant help for the minute,, the licence key has run out and I cant find where I stored it :confused:

Hey whitenemesis my buttons still haven't magically started working yet :( lol :) I keep trying them just in case.

I will ring mercedes southwest on monday and see what they say but I'm not sure how 'clever' they are up there.

Im sure we can get it sorted :) I hope so as I love my new sports wheel!!

The airbag connectors were stubborn, was funny how the room cleared when I was removing them lol haha! :D

MB Swindon spent about a hour with the STAR machine but no luck. The technician said he couldn't interrogate the s'wheel system as there was no communication.
He suggested the button control module that resides in the airbag module was incompatible with the car.....
Now, I've checked on EPC and can find no mention of said module. In fact the only difference between our cars is the spiral contact. But as the wires had the same colours and pin-out I don't see what would be different.

It is an odd one! I really can't see what could be causing the issue? Maybe we need someone with something between the ears and star. If we had different cars I could believe it but the fact we both have facelift w203's and all thats different is a trim option it makes no sense.

If necessary maybe we will have to swap a module from within the airbag/button area?

Lets hope someone else can shed some light :D

A change in cars tok place after 04-04

I would have measured them cold with an ohm meter, they are only tactile switches.

I will do what I can for whitenemesis as he is a lovely chap bit I have never met bigmacplease and he might be horrible:D

both VIN first 6 numbers please

Late 2004 and 2005 they are both facelift models.

Malcolm do you mean measure the three pin connecter?

Just for the record I like to think I'm not horrible but I could be wrong :D

What would you say whitenemesis? :D

I will PM you my vin malcolm thanx in advance for anyhelp!

I remember when I've looked before that some wiring diagrams in WIS have notes such as 'pin 1 becomes pin3' etc. with a date reference.

I am suprised you've had this problem. Sucks!

TV seems to be on the case. but if you need any help let me know.

Ok sorry thought the entire thing might help WDC203040

I can always pop mine off and give it a test if you require it :)

Yes please any help, its hard finding the right page

I remember those changes, they are on the connection between the contact spiral and the restraint systems control module.

If you don't have any SRS light's then you can assume that wiring is good.

Hey Jay that could be the issue :) did you have any button issues? I know you said you had an air bag warning message?

There was a green and yellow plug that went into the air bag and then a small plug that was wired black - red - white with black being located on the notched side.

This was the same on both cars but with a slightly different shape. The wiring on the main plug on the steering column was the same colour for colour. Thats why we just swapped the plugs.

Thanx for all the help :D :D
