Steering Wheels Swapped - Now Buttons Don't Work!

There was a green and yellow plug that went into the air bag and then a small plug that was wired black - red - white with black being located on the notched side.

This was the same on both cars but with a slightly different shape. The wiring on the main plug on the steering column was the same colour for colour. Thats why we just swapped the plugs.

Thanx for all the help :D :D

OK you don't happen to have the plug letter/number do you, it will normally show it just by the plug and also the pin numbers on the connector?

Sorry no :( the wheels all fixed back on and I'm in bed on my laptop. If it helps the plug on mine was originally a flat plug and whitenemesis was a squarer looking plug.

I have a feeling that it may e easier to change over the clock spring

This is where it is one set of instruction up to 23.04.04 and another set as of the 24.04.04

It also mention putting the car on STAR to remove any codes caused by disconnecting, but if the batteries were off I do not get that bit

Thats probably what's at fault here, hopefully the pic will show the pin number's just to be sure.

Poor pics I know but they are so small and my hand was not that steady :(

What spring is that then malcolm? My car was the end of 2004 I believe so we should have been the same?

OK swap the plug's back and then swap the spring.

Malc mean's the clock spring / contact spiral that is located behind the steering wheel, the chaged wiring refers to the SRS system.

Thanx for the reply :) What is the spring?
It looks like a pancake and it is the bit of kit that the wiring for those plugs is connected to, its right behind the steering wheel.

It allow's you to turn the wheel without disconnecing the wire's

Yes I have looked at both diagrams are nothing like the same, this is for the clock spring

So you need to change them,,I will print off both versions and I can send them to you.

What a way to spend a Sat night, how sad can you get

I know the part you mean. Do you know how its removed? Is it a simple job? Sorry about the amount of questions just want to know if its maybe a job we could do ourselves :)

Ah nice one Malcolm.

bigmacplease, it's a simple enough job to do (10 mins once the wheel is off) but it's nice to have the pictures to see what its talking about so the instruction's are nice to have.

Edit - One thing the instruction's don't always mention but is vitally important, do this with the wheel's pointing straight ahead and do not allow the spring to rotate in its housing (the wire exit should be locked in place) otherwise you can break the steering angle sensor and the spring respectively.

I remember when I've looked before that some wiring diagrams in WIS have notes such as 'pin 1 becomes pin3' etc. with a date reference.

I am suprised you've had this problem. Sucks!

TV seems to be on the case. but if you need any help let me know.

I read that also but thought it pertained to the restraint module. We don't have any error messages so I assumed all is OK?

Yea thats great news :) Just a shame we live so far apart but never mind. The guy at the garage disconnected the battery when taking the wheel off, do you think that will be necessary when we do it ourselves to swap this part over?

Do you think this should solve the issue? I will be over the moon if it does! Thank you greatly for the help!!

That wiring mod does only relate to the SRS system, it has no effect on the steering wheel control's at all.

If your car's are late 04 and 05 then they both should include this anyways

Yes disconnect the battery, hopefully it will sort the issue.

Everything else is the same.

This is printed on the face of the contact spiral :)
