The EV fact thread

To you it is. To others it is alienational marketing. Whatever we choose to call it, the distinct lack of enthusiasm in the public for EVs suggests it isn't working.
You think that the people you elected, who made this happen, intend to switch over the world's one billion motors to EV in a year or two.

But all those Lefties, Eco's, and Scientists will point out that this is a changeover that's going to take decades.

And that's before the likes of Trump, the Sheiks and the Southern Hemisphere throw in their usual delaying tactics.

Like colour TV, mobile phones, PC's, the Internet and Artificial Intelligence, things don't happen overnight.

Well that’s nearly 2000 posts and the only facts I can see are;
If you want an EV you get one
If you don’t want an EV you don’t get one
If you’ve got an EV nobody will convince you that you’ve made a bad decision
If you haven’t got an EV nobody is going to convince you to get one

Nearly forgot, they both catch fire from time to time

And that some of us want a 2nd or 3rd Generation EV, because they'll be better than the first generation EV's

And affordability matters, especially amongst the 75% of the population who use vehicles that were second hand when they bought them.

$2,500 for an Apple in 1991 ? Eight weeks gross income for a working man? It didn't make sense.

A lot of the drivers blaming Tesla for this but surely a little bit of forethought may have helped

From the article:
''"The problem was, was that five out of the 10 stalls were out of order. The four it showed available had… vacant cars that were there, so we were all using one charger," Welbourne said. ''

Isn't that the etiquette thing I've mentioned before? Cars left squatting denying others access.

Automatic gearboxes - rubbish, weren't they?

Percentage of new British cars that were automatic:

2000 - just 15%

2010 - 25%

2020 54% - at last the majority of new car sales.

It takes time.

Just saw the Kia EV9 in a showroom. Massive car (Range Rover size), beautiful looking, but very pricey. Mrs MJ also liked it...

It looks v cool. But, it says Kia on it...

True stats.
But imho they weren't rubbish from about 1960 onwards (just different and less fuel efficient)

For sure, but the public didn’t agree with you.

Personally, I didn’t indulge until I got a 1990 Sovereign, and only then because a manual simply wasn’t an option..

Mercedes are badly built, rust and the dealers want to spit at their customers.... but here we are, obsessed.

1
"what you driving these days"
'Mercedes'
"nice, which one?"
'just an old e class'
"cool"

2
"what you driving these days?"
'kia e"
"a kia?!"
'but it's an EV9 which'
"a kia?!"
'is recognised by none other than cargurus on youtube as being better than a'
"whatever, been anywhere nice on holiday lately?"

Sadly that's very true. 🙄
A mixture of Badge snobbery and pure ignorance.:dk::doh::wallbash:

I’ve honestly never understood the obsession with manual gearboxes, when new automatics are far quicker/instant? Not to mention the faff in stop start traffic with manuals.

Essentially what the Koreans are trying to do is follow the Japanese automakers' path - build-up the brand name. In the sixties Japan made quirky little cars that were poorly built and rusted quickly. Within 20 years names such as Toyota and Honda were synonym with built quality and reliability. And, one Japanese manufacturer even managed to get a brand name (Lexus) competing against the very best from Germany.

The Korean are hoping to do just that. Will they succeed? Time will tell. But if they do, then the Chinese will want to do the same.

The Kia and Hyundai EVs beat most of their German competitors on most tests.
Not just because they don’t look like a flattened potato.

Not all autos are quicker, although it depends what you mean by 'quicker'. I suspect you mean the actual cog swap is quicker? The DSG gearbox on the wife's car is quite frankly crap for spirited driving due to its lag, but is ok for cruising. The auto box on my SLK is a bit better than the DSG, but I can still catch it out under certain conditions.
