The EV fact thread

If it's not me who will be driving the car tomorrow morning... then I have two options: refuel it in the evening, or prepare a jerrycan for a rescue mission later in the day.... :(
A note left on the driver's seat prompting the next driver to refuel before going much further would suffice.
IMO, a special trip to refuel an ICE is plain stupid. To fire up an ICE for such a short trip is plain stupid. To be unable to schedule a five minute stop on the way home the previous day or immediately after setting off in the morning doesn't imply a high IQ either.

If your statement refers to the unwillingness or inability of others who use the car to refuel then that's an entirely separate issue - which frankly smacks of laziness on their part.

You need to think beyond Wimbledon ;)

The electric version of the diesel tractor I bought (identical spec. other than the fuel type) was three times the price, which I couldn't have afforded even if it made long term financial sense (which it didn't). I keep fuel for it at home because the nearest forecourt is a 12 mile round trip and it does 10 mph flat out :D Actually as an 'agricultural machine' (tax class) it's restricted to a maximum distance of 1.5 km on road anyway.

I also keep petrol for my old ride-on mower, which I paid £700 for 2 years ago. The only electric equivalent I know of (in terms of cutting width) is £7,300 new (too recent to be readily available second hand).
Strictly manual lawnmower for me.

Excellent exercise.

It’s good for her.

Sounds like straightforward Dad economics to me.

Except in the Mx5’s case. “She has staff”

But good enough for the rest of us.

More people don't than do have a company car. Why do you urge them to get an EV
I don’t urge anyone to get an EV, unless it’s a company car or if they foolishly think it would save the planet. (It won’t.) And I don’t urge anyone to get a hybrid either.

There’s maybe a case for a less than £10k used EV as a low annual mileage runaround, but seriously, why not get a glorious used Ford Focus?

The Traffic Light alliance is forcing us down the road of a fast EV transition, but it’s not that fast. Will EU deadlines slide? Of course they will. It took a decade of delay before they all signed up to a Federal Europe with five Presidents. The deadlines will slide on EVs and all the other CO2 stuff. (Check European News for details of the strikes and demos.)

You've been pressing the case for convenience of recharging at home for 2p/mile pretty heavily. Anyway, tiresome, lets leave it at that.

For journeys where ICE doesn't hit operating temp - ideal. But limited to Leafs and their soon to be discontinued public charging system? Why not the Focus? No obvious reason not to - but we know the intention is to phase out ICE. What we don't know is the method(s).

We just don't know what will transpire and deadlines may well be extended. But of little use if no one has ICE to offer and I'm pretty certain ICE development has stalled and how long before the production lines are scrapped?

Looks like what the Allegro would have become if only people hadn't panned it unfairly

The Allegro 3 was actually a pretty decent car for the time. Earlier ones (except for the Equipe) were pretty poor

Imho of course.

Rose tinted specs?.....they were awful...right from the off....badly built, poor handling and ugly......much like an EV.....but at least those are slowly getting better....the All Agro never did.

...To fire up an ICE for such a short trip is plain stupid...

Give this man a beer on me... :D

I've been agonising about this for years, refusing to "just drop-off someone at the tube station around the corner because it's raining", or "move the car nearer the house for tomorrow morning", etc etc, I felt in my bones the metal shredding with the engine started from cold for a 5 minutes journey... 😭

No such worries with the EV 😎 - Just push the button and move the car, even 1-inch, and obviously drive normally first thing, no need to wait for the car to warm up etc.

(If I was tracking it, I'd wait for the suspension, brakes, and tyres to warm up, but on the road it's immaterial)

The mother of a friend bought a new Alegro back in 1977. It kept going back to the garage to be repaired, again and again... no one shed a tear when my friend - being a new driver - wrote it off after less than a year. His mother had for many years a Mini Clubman and was quite impressed with it... so she thought what's wrong with buying another car from (then BL) the same people. How wrong she was...

Out of interest.....is there anything on an EV that does need to warm up (heating aside!).....like the transmission etc, before using it flat out????....I assume there must be some sort of lubrication involved.

As per my previous post, suspension, brakes, and tyres. But since I never drive it 'flat out', it's not an issue. I just drive it as I normally would - from cold.

There's nothing else that needs warming on an EV, as far as I know. The battery temperature will affect range, possibly 0-60? No idea.

Oh! Where were you - when I still drank?

It isn't the wear aspect (the oils I use have tackifiers so there's oil present at the turn of the key - merely not at pressure) that bothers me as much as dumping the acidic products of combustion into the oil which will remain until the next long enough journey to boil them off. Acid etches bearing surfaces.

Advantage EV - no disputing it.

AFAIK there are no circulatory oil systems so no need for concern on that score. I did see something about different greases being developed for the motors. Something to do with proofing them against electromagnetic effects. I didn't read any further into it.
