Except in a REEV - the engine does not drive the wheels. That's how Nissan 'e-POWER' cars like the X-Trail and Qashqai work ("series hybrid" configuration). But any hybrid would give the same benefit of extended range, being able to run continuously on ICE power if necessary.
You can use the car and never start the engine - if you don’t want to.
But it would be nice to have a tank of fuel and an engine/generator onboard in case you ever run out of electricity!
This is not a logical answer to the range problem of EVs - but it works for people who say they would not buy an EV due to range anxiety.
If there was a low cost charger on every street corner that was always available for people to use and the car fully charged in 5 minutes from flat - then range anxiety would not exist!
Logic says that it would be stupid to carry around the extra weight & complexity of an engine, generator & fuel tank - when you might only use it occasionally
