Trouble setting Linksys router up??

Nik

Sorry you have had so many problems with this, if I had known, I wouldn't have sent it out

Glad you seem to be getting somewhere.

I have had a similar problem with the same model router and the ethernet ports at the back died but everything else carried on working, may be a common fault.

If you can be sure that your desktop PC has a working port, that is the best starting point, but if neither your laptop or your desktop can access it, then I suspect the router ethernet ports.

By all means, try anothe rcable, take it back to where you bought it and get them to test it but cat6 is the same as cat5, just has a higher speed rating, in fact I'm using cat5 on most of my gigabit ethernet ports at the mo' with no problems.

To be honest, for the sake of fifty quid for a new router, you have wasted a lot of time with this, you even get a new ethernet cable with the new router, how much did the cable cost?:(

No problem, it has been quite fun to get sorted, as have never looked into wireless networks before. Thanks again for sending it, beer chits in the post!!:D :D

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-02-3F-0A-28-45

Your ethernet adapter is still showing disconnected!

Have you actually plugged your new ethernet cable into the LAN port on the router and then the other end to your laptop yet?

If you have, try another port on the linksys router, if not try another.

If this makes no difference and you have previously used your ethernet lan port recently successfully, the router may be duff. If you haven't used it before or for a long time then the problem may be with your laptop still. Oh wait, you recently used it to connect to your desktop PC?

Have you tried what Smeeeee suggested yet? If dialling in http://192.168.1.1 when the laptop is physically connected to the router gets you to the router set up page then you know the problem is with your desktop. If you can't see the set up page from either laptop or desktop then the problem is with the router.

yep it should definatly be a standard cat5 cable about 50p a meter and pc shop, not crossover

Yes, everything is working fine with the laptop, have set the router up and can access my tiscali account.

Now trying to do the same with my desktop, but wired and the pc cannot see the router. Was wondering if it was a cable problem?

We have full connection!!!

Seems some of the Linksys routers need a full reset (found this info on the net)

Press and hold the reset button for 30secs, then switch off for 10 secs, then switch back on, connect cables and bingo, lights up like a Christmas tree!!:bannana:

Thank you to everybody for their help, especially masqueraid!!

Have some narnas!!:bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

Pleased you got it working. I assumed from the outset we were working with a reset device. You know what they say about assume....

Did loads of resets as per the instructions, hold for 10secs, but to no effect!! Extra special last ditched reset seems to have done the job.

Well I've learnt something from this thread. I've just found out that my Linksys router has a reset button (or rather red ringed hole that I assume is the reset button).

The method given to me by BT when the router refused to connect to the Internet once was:

While switched on disconnect cables connecting PC to router. Turn off both router and PC. After 30 seconds reconnect cables and turn on both router and PC. So far it has worked for me.

Another quick update!

Recently upgraded to the Tiscali 8MB service, and over the last few days have experienced speeds from 7.4 to 8.2 (according to the little PC's!!) Was experiencing dropped connections on a regular basis, and assumed that this was because of the testing of my line??

But since we got the router going, not dropped the conection all afternoon:confused: Why do you think that is??

Why do you think that is??

Probably because you've got a much better quality modem on your line :p

Great news about the connection - happy networking!

Thank god for that (73 posts later) :D

Glad it is finally all working well.

:D :D :D

These things are sent to try us, but every day is a learning day!!!

Never be too cool for school!!!

Thinking about setting up in business now, as a wireless networking engineering thingy majig.

I expect there will be plenty of people on here willing to help me if I run into any problems!!:o :o :D
