Trouble setting Linksys router up??

"Media disconnected" - I'd work on that!

Just in case you are unfamiliar with the term - 'media disconnected' in this case means the network cable is not there.

Let's check your network card - Right Click on My Computer and select Properties, the select the Hardware tab then click on the Device Manager button. Look in that list for any Network Adaptor entries and post what you find here. Looking especially for red X's or Exclamation Points

Or better still, bribe Masqueraid with a bottle of red - I have heard he is cheap :bannana: :p

Was him who said he lived close by?

I don't think the issue is with the router

Looks like the drivers for your network card are not installed. Seems like the network card is built into the PC motherboard. Is this the laptop or your desktop PC? What make/model is it? When the network (CAT6) cable is plugged in do you get a green steady or flashing light next to it or an orange light or no light at all?

Also looks like you are trying connect both the router and the Tiscali modem to your PC at the same time. Is this the case?

This is my desktop pc, it is a Sony Vaio PCV RX406.

When the cable is plugged in the Wlan light is on but not the light that corrosponds to the port at the back of the router the cable is in!!

Did not want to delete my Tiscali details until I knew I was up and running with the router!

Nope, all seems well with the network adaptors. No exclamations or red X's!!

I reckon the existing settings may be the problem - it sees them and just wants to go straight online, hence it cannot get to the router

But like I said, never done ADSL so would wait until someone more experienced comments before doing anything

Agreed. But if you want to retain the settings for the time being let's work from the laptop. Can you remove the Tiscali settings from there and post the same ipconfig details once you reboot with just the router physically attached and no ADSL?

I think part of the issue is that Tiscali use fixed IP addresses for their ADSL accounts & setting these on the PC are just confusing it!

in your internet options (control panel) look at the "connections" tab

select "never dial" and see what happens then

That should disable your tiscali modem

Andy

Also the ADSL modem needs to be either physically or virtually "downstream" of the network hub.

Of course we currently have chicken & egg situation because without configuring the Router as the Tiscali device it won't connect and while the clients have the fixed IP/DNS settings we can't configure

Laptop stuff!!

This was taken with the router connected wirelessly. Laptop picks it up OK, and McAfee asks if it is ok to grant access to the internet. But still no pages load!!

But can you get at the router itself now?

P.S. I'll give you 1 more hour before you throw it out the window - without opening it first :bannana:

Is the laptop configured to run on any other networks already?

If not I'd remove the Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface
- this might mean you need to reinstall your Tiscali software in order to use the laptop on your internet connection until the router problem is sorted out.

To remove it again go to Start/Run/'cmd' and in the window type:

ipv6 uninstall

press enter and then create and post the new ip.txt as before. You should now get a wireless link to the router.

Your ethernet adapter is still showing disconnected!

Have you actually plugged your new ethernet cable into the LAN port on the router and then the other end to your laptop yet?

If you have, try another port on the linksys router, if not try another.

If this makes no difference and you have previously used your ethernet lan port recently successfully, the router may be duff. If you haven't used it before or for a long time then the problem may be with your laptop still. Oh wait, you recently used it to connect to your desktop PC?

Are you running Zone Alarm or some other firewall software on this PC?

I expect you have reset the router anyway, but they can be configured not to allow config via wireless so ensure all you attempts to connect to the routers console is done via a cabled connection.

Update!!

After plying masqueraid with plenty of red, we have at last got my laptop working wirelessly with the Linksys router.

Final problem, is when I connect the router to my desktop PC with the cat6 cable I bought the pc still does not see it. Tried all the ports at the back of the router, but no luck. Read on the net that it should be a cat5 cable??

Any cable experts out there??

It is definately not a crossover cable I bought.
