W124 500E - put a deposit down.

Keep up the good work and well done for getting those spare Hella lamps, what a find!

I quite like those wheels. They have style and for me, they suit your car. Great job done.

Think there was a silver 500E which had custom 12J OZ Futura's on the rear wearing 285 rubber - it can take quite a size. I'm running 10Jx18's on the rear's of my estate and still have another inch or so to spare - if that helps!

Cheers Niks. Nice to meet you dude!

It'd be good to meet up for a few pics of our cars once mine is finally out the garage! I'll give you a buzz.

Right guys, thanks for all the help on here. FPR replaced and the rough idle has gone! Also the car is cranking fine, starts perfectly hot or cold, no backfiring and revs cleanly. The throttle issue explained earlier was the MAF. Replaced the MAF from a 93' W140 S500 coupe and it's working perfectly again.

While the car was in, I also had the following done:

- Coolant flushed out and replaced
- Gearbox oil and filter replaced (they said filter was a larger one...?)
- Diff oil replaced
- All engine breather hoses replaced (plastic was brittle and breaking off so new MB items bought)
- FPR replaced (MB part as the Bosch unit I got was not correct)
- SLS reservoir pipe and clips replaced due to a leak and fluid topped up
- Plugged into diagnostics again with no error codes returning

All in all very happy I will be replacing the spark plugs with MB items (as heard they are more superior to Bosch units and they took a hammering recently) and potentially changing the dist caps and arms to Bosch from the Beru items I have (to try and avoid any issues from them in the future).

Next jobs on the agenda are to fit the new alloys I bought along with a new set of discs and pads all around. The alloys are giving me problems as they spacers supplied don't even fit the hubs. Annoying!

I think I will be getting the MB discs and pads (as they're about £350 from the main dealer and should be the right parts) and will also fit metal braided brake hoses (to improve the brake feel).

In the meantime I've bought Rainbow W124 front and rear speakers. I fitted a new head unit and sub over the weekend, reworked some of the cables and my rear speakers are now working. The car was also wired up good and true so removed all the extra wiring and stuff - tonnes of it came out!

I have lots of other stuff which I have listed out to do over the summer but will attack them gradually - I will get a list up here. Thanks for reading - a few photos from the garage before I drove off (car also clicked over 172,000km on the drive back).

Cheers to Terry and the boys for looking after my 500E :thumb::thumb::thumb: Highly recommend Wayne Gates MB servicing :)

Cheers

Bill

Looking back at an earlier picture all the service parts appear to be from ECP? In which case you'll almost certainly have been issued the "wrong" spark plugs.

I've brought this to their attention several times but it's still not been corrected - they list the resistor type plugs which are not what is specced for the 119. MB have the correct non-resistor type and they're inexpensive.

It's a minor difference in the grand scheme of things (a couple of extra k-ohms of resistance in the system), but as Tesco say, every little helps.

Thanks for this. Yes they are from ECP but *I think* they are the right Bosch p/n for the M119. It is known that the original MB plugs are better than the Bosch supplied items so I have ordered the following from MB:

- 8 x MB spark plugs
- 1 x serpentine belt
- 1 x washer bottle & all associated bits and pieces (shocked they don't come together!)
- 1 x pump for the headlight washer system

Cheers

Bill

ECP list FR8DC+, which looking deeper would appear to be what Bosch's own parts catalogue recommend.

Couldn't stress this enough ! You should stick to F8DC4 plugs as intended.

Indeed it looks like they are wrong - not a major biggy though as i've ordered the proper ones from MB now. ECP supplied Bosch 408770960.

Sometimes I think it's better just ordering from MB!

Looking good Bill, can't wait to see the wheels swap though

Been ill recently so looking through some of the pics I've taken recently, got a few small jobs done:

- replaced all the fuses as they looked corroded/old - good thing to check when buying an old car
- replaced the 500E boot badge (old one wasn't looking smart)
- fit V8 badges on the wings
- replace drivers side wing mirror glass (old one was magnified)

Few cheeky pics of the engine bay and interior too  Noted the number plate covers look old so will be replaced and I may fit LED bulbs (too chav-tastic?!). As noted earlier the washer bottle and one of the pumps are in poor state when I took it out so will be replaced once the parts come through from MB. I will also replace the serpentine belt (but it actually looks ok) and maybe the shock mounts as they are cracked. Ideally I want new shocks and a suspension bush refresh but this will have to wait a few months as I've spent quite a bit of $$$ on the old beasty recently.

New badge fitted - aligned with MB instructions

V8 badges for the wings - off a CLK55 / G500

Next update will probably be about the alloy wheels (can't wait to finally get them on!).

Cheers

Bill

Few more bits done, alloys still not on...pics say it all...

Bought the pads/sensors, discs on order

Filthy down there...probably never been cleaned!

Wiring between the pumps is poor

Also replaced the front speakers with Rainbow items - actually sound very good, but then again they would against the battered OEM items

Unfortunatly I now have a new misfire! :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

I think it could be the distributor caps and arms, even though replaced I put in Beru items and Bosch is recommended. However this is unlikely as they are new, I'd expect them to fail quicker than others but not this quick...

One thing I've not changed with everything are the coil leads (as this requires pass headlight removal) so will tackle this over the weekend.

Bought rings for the spacers to let them mount (73.1mm > 66.6mm) so hopefully I can have the alloys on sooner than later. I did miss off 2 grommets and the connector off the washer bottle so back to MB to order these in.

Cheers

Cut a long story short I thought it'd be an issue with the dist caps. Turns out I was right! Removed the Beru ones and they look damaged already!!! Hardly lasted a month or so. Put the old (worn out looking) Bosch back in and cleaned them up. Car runs absolutely perfectly. Spent an hour with it and it's running nice. Kick down is nice and hard. My recommendation is to use Bosch or MB....

Anyways, off to kick ECP's ass over selling me these caps!!!

Also changed the coil wires while I was at it. Another job to tick off the list.

Right gave back the dist caps and I'm running the old ones at the moment. They're working fine at the moment but will swap them out soon anyways, about £300 for the Bosch ones is steep so saving up...

Got the rims fitted but the tyres are all wrong. Will be changing to 245/45 on the front and 265/40 on the rear to help eliminate the slight rubbing. May also go down to a 20mm spacer on the front (currently 22mm which clears the brakes) but want to avoid this ideally. Also replaced:

- MB wiper (Bosch one was so poor!), MB one is nice
- Washer sender level
- Washer grommets

I now have the brake discs and pads (discs are proper heavy duty, they weigh a tonne!) so may tackle this tomorrow if I can be bothered.

I also ordered the coolant bottle and SLS reservoir so freshen up the engine bay :) Few more bits also otw from MB in Germany, will update when they come through. Car is really coming together and I love it, really enjoying the driving and ownership experience :thumb:

Sits nice and flush now

Cheers

That's really coming together beautifully! You can't half tell the quality difference between the MB wiper (nice logo) and the Bosch one.
