Ive just bought a 1998 W140 S320L from a freind of the family who owned it since new. The bootlid does not close flush no matter how hard you slam it.
I dont know if the problem lies with the self closing mechanism.
Anyone got any ideas?

It probably needs adjusting........not exactly a simple job on these.....

the last lock of the boot closure is vacuum operated. Thect this first.

How can it go out of position by itself? When I say its not closing flush i mean its really noticible as if the boot were open

so is the soft close working or not? I suspect the soft close motor has gone or the fuse for it has blown.

No the soft closing on the boot is not working. The little metal thing thats on the bootlid and goes into the boot catch has a fair bit of play in it, is it meant to be rigid? - sorry for the poor description

if you pull down the two small plastic covers either side of the lower latch assembly, you will see 10 mm readjusting bolts -- if these come loose or out of adjustment you can reposition the latch assembly to hold the boot tightly closed. There are also two rubber adjustment stoppers on either side of the boot lid which you can screw in or out to get it sitting flush with the bodywork. Experiment with both adjustments until you get the desired closure. The close assist system does not need to be operational for this adjustment to be made.
