Hi Folks,

A friend of mine is having probs with his W202 C280 (V6).

It broke down last night with the following symptoms:

When trying to start the car, it will intermittently start and not rev above 1000rpm. It would then cut out and not spin the starter motor...on turning the key to start position there is nothing....ignition is fine and the battery is fine. The radio now has no power to it as well.

It certainly doesn't sound like a CPS problem and sounds like a relay issue.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the fuel pump and ignition relays ?

Are they one unit or separate and where can they be found and how do you identify it ?

Many Thanks

It sounds more like an OVP problem than a CPS.

There is no ovp on the aove car.

get it on a Star asap. Ths should locate the problem..

the fuel pump realy is in the boot. The stater relay (i think) is in the right hand front fuse box.

CPS issues usually only arise when the engine is hot, right?

Fuel pump relay usually allows the car to fire, but poor lumpy idle and unable to rev, or just not fire at all.

Ive had CPS probs before on V6s ive owned. They usually occur when they heat up and they shut the engine down.

In this instance, the car does start with a bit of protest, idles at around 1000rpm and refuses to rev any higher. It then cuts out.

Sorry radio not working was a bit of a red herring.

Resolved

Turned out to be the fuel sender units - Due to the saddle type design of the W202 fuel tanks the sender units are responsible for keeping an equal amount of fuel in both parts of the tanks.

In this case there was fuel in one side of the tank but nothing in the side where the fuel pump draws from.

Many thanks to Ollie for confirming diagnosis via phone.
