What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

Couple of weekend jobs....

Fitted a bike rack, this one involves bonding the rails to the doors with Sikaflex which seemed a bit daunting but was actually very straightforward - lots of measuring and checking before I applied the adhesive! I was quoted £200 to have it fitted - that didn't appeal to me .. I can buy a tank fo diesel for that !

Audio upgrade .... under-seat Sub and 6 Channel Amp. This an Alpine Sprinter specific product where the Amp just plugs into the existing loom. That bit was very straightforward but lots of dashboard trim panels to take out. Sounds much better now!

I use this (from Costco)

Thanks.

What about waxes, ceramic or otherwise? It looks like its been treated to something.

In the next few weeks I plan to give mine a quick coat of ceramic wax. Cant remember the brand but it does a good job for 2-3 months.

Really need to give it a clay bar first but I've got a family there's often not enough time to do all the right things in the right order.....

The car had a machine polish to freshen it up over a year ago.... no other polish applied apart from the car wash with Carnauba wax in it..

Thanks. The paint on yours really does pop in the photos. I'm now planning to get mine done when I get back from my holiday. When I bought it (at seven years old) it really did look factory. I'd like to get that finish back.

Did you do the same to the G? That's also got a great-looking finish to it.

No.. the G has only ever had a wash in all the time I've owned it.. Its not perfect by any means...but it cleans up nice.. I have been considering getting it buffed.. but its not what that truck is about...there are a few small dents and scratches.. it has a patina to it that suits its rugged looks.. I never worry when it's parked if someone is parked too close.. its very tough. and well protected with rubber straps down the sides.. and metal bumpers and even metal number plates!

Interesting - I guess it's somewhat similar with mine - I can take some great pics of my car looking v glossy although, close up I can see all the blemishes; mainly very light scratches which will polish out easily enough.

It's nice to have a car which isn't perfect so you can relax about it. I was paranoid about my back bumper yesterday when I was parallel parking.

Why 😱

It's an all year-round car, well mine is 😇

I'm off to the static in France on Sunday, 850miles each way with a small trailer on, wish me luck 😇

We're in a pretty rural location now ... single track roads for about 5 miles in every direction, and lots of farm traffic so there's mud on the roads for some time after any rain. I don't mind too much squeezing the Vito against a hedge to let a tractor or combine get past but I wouldn't want to do that to the SL! Before moving we did a fair few trips of 10-15 miles (Mrs BTB going to work, checking the horses twice a day, etc.) which we used the SL for if the weather was nice ... now we can go for a week sometimes without driving anywhere. But I did enjoy taking it out yesterday with all the roads dry and fairly clean, so will try to use it more!

I have driven mine all year round in the past, even in the snow. But with two other vehicles the SL has been kept for nice weather for a long time ... it's only really driven with the roof down and hasn't had the hard top on it for ages (apart from when we moved house). I just realised I've had it for 18 years now

Good luck with your trip! I also have a small trailer (bought up here for the tractor), but I've not been tempted to fit a towbar to the SL yet :D Mind you the local tip is a round trip of almost 50 miles which would be a nice run for it?!

Ps, not all R129 s are type approved.

EC type approval was only required in the UK from August 1998 though - no problem fitting a towbar to anything registered before that (mine's a '97/P).

New-looking back bumper. I've been staring at all the scratches and scrapes for far too long. That and touching up the odd stone chip has really lifted it. It's only a machine polish and wheel refurb away from being finished and very much back to how I bought it.

Got the dreaded Whoooosh sound last night so early this a.m. put the car over the pit, stripped the undertrays off and removed bottom intercooler hose to reveal a one inch split. Couldn’t get a new hose quickly so did a temp repair. All good now.

Have a chat to the insurers, i don't think they will see it that way.

Academic, as I have no intention of fitting a towbar to my R129! But ... UK law says EC type approval isn't required for older vehicles (how could it be if such a thing didn't exist when they were built?). If the car's handbook specifically covers towing and gives braked/unbraked trailer weight limits then it was was clearly approved by the manufacturer and there would be no basis for anyone to object to a towbar being fitted.

Mines a 2000 W, check the plate on the inside of the B pillar, will have 4 sets of numbers for towing.

Only the second number relates to towing (maximum gross train weight). The others are the maximum gross weight and front/rear axle loads.

If the 3650 is showing ------- thats a no tow.

Other way around - if there's no gross train weight given for a post Aug '98 car then it's not type-approved for towing.
