What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

Spent the whole day on our car. Not touched it since daughter got hers 🥴.

A full wheels off clean and engine bay too. Proper chuffed with it. Tucked away in the garage now. 👌

Fixed the noisy window wipers on our B200 w246 model, making a really rough grinding noise.
Turns out to be the motor on its way out, new one silly price and second hand ones come complete with all the linkages and stuff but £200 plus on Ebay.
Took a gentle risk and bought one off a A Class from same vintage as motors looked the same but completely different part numbers.
The A class is more readily available and cost £15.25, fits and works like a dream, well happy.

Replaced the right-hand cornering lamp bulb, then wondering why the car still thinks there is a problem with it.

Installed this new gear selector:

I had another go at the front light units on the Vito today. I'd previously tried a Holts headlight restoration kit ... I only did one side with it, and wasn't happy with the results. It uses wet sanding with progressively finer grades of paper on a circular backing plate that you use in a drill, followed by polishing with a foam pad on the same backing plate, then finally a clear sealer. I found the flat sanding disk extremely difficult to use due to the compound curves on these light units, and despite spending the best part of an afternoon on it I still ended up with fine scratches on the surface ... giving a 'smeary' effect.

So I ordered some bits and pieces from CleanYourCar:

3" foam backing disk
'Heavy cut' rotary pad & cutting compound
Polishing pad & polish
Microfibre cloth

I also got 500 ml of IPA and a plant spray (you need 50:50 IPA & water to rinse off the polish). From the Holts kit I used the M14 thread drill adapter (this screws into the backing disk), the can of spray sealant, and the two polishing cloths.

Much happier with the results now. I wasn't really sure how much pressure to use and what speed on the drill and could possibly have been a bit more aggressive, but I think it turned out OK.

Nearside unit as it was to start with, after washing & drying (this was the worst one):

Offside unit to start with (not as bad as the nearside one, but similar fine crazing at the top and in front of the headlight bulbs):

Changed the thermostat and auxiliary water pump, cleaned the rust off the high pressure diesel pump and thermostat support bracket and give them a couple of coats of rustoleum , a little bit of an improvement.Cleared all DTCs went for a twenty mile drive, all codes stayed away and everything dry...so far.🤞

Round trip to Heathrow T4 today.
Managed 34.9 at best.
Not great for a 1.6 blue efficiency engine. My 5.5 Biturbo could get 29+
Man maths says I should be back in an AMG;)

All good here S. You too I trust. Catch you at Beaulieu in a couple of weeks.

Yeah, that M274 engine is far more frugal than my M271.
Still I won't have it forever;)

First MOT for the shed in my ownership.
Passed with an advisory on two front brake pipes covered in grease.
A service booked for 22nd Aug.
