Well, after yesterday taking ages to extract a ball joint from the offside track rod end, using a combination of, pickle fork, hammers, an air chisel and a blow torch with propane/butane mix, plus a liberal amount of swearing thrown at it I was pretty well stumped. Inspiration came in the form of a yellow can of MAPP gas and and adaptor to fit my torch that I had stashed away for emergencies, I decided that this one of them.
After burning enough rubber to make Greta Thumberg’s head explode with rage, and getting the knuckle very, lets say warm, I air chiseled it again, whilst using a 4lb club hammer on the side of the knuckle, it finally came free.
Then I had to undo it from the inner, 22mm Spaniard was found, and extended using the ‘two wrench’ method, with a 30mm slipped over the end of the 22, I again realised, this was not going to be an easy win. Long story short I managed it in the end by using a trolley jack on the end of the car 22 applying WD40, I know it isn’t the best penetrant, but I had run out of PB Blaster.
It came free, counted the number of turns to get it off and left-the lock nut in place 17 turns, screwed on the new on 17 turns and there was a 2mm gap to the nut, so I did a couple more turns, I think I now realise this was wrong and i should’ve just tightened the nut now I have a toe out of about 5mm, I am sure that must be wrong but hey I am going for an alignment, so what is the worst that can happen?
oh, and today I am going to do absolutely nothing, as I have to fit a power steering pump and a new serpentine belt before I can drive the thing. I may try sorting out the toe out situation before I go for the alignment, although it is only 10 miles to the place, I’m going to get us aligned, for the princely sum of £240, if you please?
