While the SLK was in for its successful MoT, I dropped (and you’ll see why the term is appropriate) the B Class off to have its wheels refurbished. Just had a phone call to tell me that it slipped off a stand and cracked the gearbox casing. They are most apologetic (I feel for the guy having to make the call) and are going to have a reconditioned box fitted. I hope I can trust the car again after this but don’t want his insurance to write it off. It’s just been MoT’ed and had four Continentals fitted.

So sorry to hear that. It sounds like they’re doing the right thing, so hopefully it will be all above board.

Happened to me with a 2.0 ford Granada , changing the torque converter oil seal , gearbox fell off the stands . Game over . £500 for a recon box for a £10 oil seal. Garage owner wasn't amused at his staff . 😞

Did my front discs and pads this morning, just thought I'd share one reason why brembo has minimum thickness guides for the 4 pot calipers . It may well be the case for all cars tbh. But this is possibly the 2nd or 3rd set of pads fitted , before I bought the glc. But just imagine how far those pistons will be out when these pads get to the wear sensor. Rule of thumb is if the discs are around the min thickness point , do not fit another set of pads . Looking at those discs I'd imagine most people would say they had loads of life left , but it's not all about that ,as I found out ,doing a bit research. New discs and pads fitted and that gap is down to about 2mm.

New Airmatic compressor fitted to the E55 this afternoon, all seems fine and just need to return the old one. Took longer to get the trays and liners off and on, than it did to swap compressors..
Not easy if you have a kite 🪁.

Never heard of the pistons coming right out of the caliper during use on any car.....that would be a major design fault. Have you every removed a caliper piston?....surprisingly long. Of course you can not tell how worn your discs are from a photo like that as they don't wear right on the edges and leave a lip the same width as when they were new even when completely worn out.

Typical Brembo piston.

I have yes . I understand your point also. Fully . It's also about fluid leaking past the seal. There are many factors. For example the piston is open to rust once past the rubber bellows if it's out to far , pedal travel . Factors outlined by clever people that design brake systems 👍👍

46mm long . Not alot left in after 2 sets of pads and discs wear .

Its never past the bellows....one end of the bellow is attached to the outer most end of the piston, the other sits a ridge just inside the caliper where the piston slides......So the bellow expands as the pad wears and the piston travels out. No more piston is exposed to the elements when the pads are worn than when they are new.

They will after 2 sets of pads ,going onto a 3rd 👍 plus disc wear.

They wont....I dont think you quite understand how they work..........anyway....back on topic.

I understand fully , but I don't think the bellows would still be attached to the piston end if you pumped the piston out fully. Yes back on topic , 😁 😁

Part large service today, spark plugs changed and oil/filter changed. Air filters and cabin filter in transit and I'll do the brake fluid when I get the car on my mates two poster. What a pain in the backside the plugs are in the SL, especially the rear two each side and even more so when you've got big hands like mine!

Took mine and his to a new car wash place on the otherside of town. It is a book and pay system and opportunistic arrive and wash. Hubby had his washed first then he went home. I them got mine done straight afterwards and went home. When pulling onto the drive I could see the streaks on his now fully dried car, and the wheels still had visible brake dust. Got out and had a look at mine, and it was the same. Wing mirrors had streaks and cobwebs and brake dust on the wheels. That's that then won't be going back. Have been recommended a detailer and described as having OCD. Brilliant just what you want in my eyes.

That’s often said about professional car valeters or detailers. A professional will cost you more but the quality of work and materials will be better. We all pay our money and take our choices.

Lubed both cars locks and jiggled them with the metal key .
Gave the CLK roof mechanism hinges a spray and lubed all the rubber seals I can see .
