Which fuel do you guys use?

Tesco Momentum. Never 95 as it causes the M156 engine to knock.

It won't knock, the knock detection will back off the ignition before that becomes an issue. A step change in fuel might get a few rattles, but the ECU will sort that within a few revs, quicker than you could blink.

Even with 98/99ron the ECU will still run the engine up to knock point.

That's the reason it goes better with 98/99, more ignition advance = more efficient combustion at higher revs.

more advance = higher combustion chamber pressure, applied for longer, for same amount of fuel.

Add in forced induction and of course you can run more boost too, soe even more gains there.

Always use the best fuel / highest RON available.

From my BMW turbo days (335i) back to back dyno runs gave 40bhp more with v power than 95, on a standard car.

Best I can get whenever the beast is thirsty (which is quite a lot). Get better noises out of Shell V Power, don't know why.

Don't forget winter tyres, aftermarket HID headlamp, tinted windows, and ... oh yes, and rust on the wheel arches :p

M.

On the subject of winter tyres I have just purchased a set of alloys and winter tyres. Tucked away in the garage for bad days. Cheaper to buy them now than in October. Paid £600 for the lot including genuine 18 inch c63 wheels.

Ok, 18 inchers are naff but they'll do for winter ;)

It does knock.

The ECU in for the N54 provided a map for 95 RON and although power wasn't great the ECU adjusted for it. I had two 35i cars.

My C63 does not like 95 at all. According to the manual unlike the N54 which can take 95 the M156 cannot. I had knocking and and CEL show. Not made the same mistake since and it's running like a dream now.

I use shell v-power or tesco 99.

To be fair, I also buy a fuel line cleaner additive every 3 tanks to keep the system tip-top.

Probably doesn't make a difference but i feel good about it.

I only ever use shell v-power nitro for my beast :)

Tesco 99 for mine. tried v power but there's no discernible difference between it and the Tesco fuel.

Tried to find Tesco 99 / momentum for years, but it must only be available in selected supermarkets, and as we don't shop at Tescos, doing a detour and queueing for half an hour doesn't appeal very often.

The 5 Tescos within 30 mins of us don't do it.

Even city tesco metro forecourts never do it As far as i know.

Knock detection is a safety mechanism and it overides any set mapping. Modern knock detection is so sharp hat the ECU can "ride" the knock limit and set itself to match each fuel batch.

Regardless of maps, the ECU will pull ignition advance if it detects any knock, and keep pulling until knock stops.. They've done this for 20 years or more, so a modern high performance engine won't knock more than the odd light rattle or two.

Agree though, my M157 says 98 ron min and it only gets V power, but on the odd occasion i had to put 95 ron in it, it never knocked, it just felt a bit asthmatic over 4500rpm.

My petrol cars always felt like that.

On 95ron, or is that a comment about petrol engines in general??

Strange that. Round my way Tescos have 3 to choose from at each pump; diesel, normal 95 and Momentum 99.

Very little momentum around here too got 2 massive Tescos near me neither of them stock it if they did I would use it as it's really good fuel originally developed for a race series

Nearest Momentum is 7 miles away on a route I never use so not much point when I got v power and BP Ultimate within 2 miles
