Would you buy another Merc ?

Not sure if it'll be a Mercedes, but I can say with some conviction that I won't be replacing this X5 with another BMW...

So I test drove the cheapest S500 on the MB website last Friday (LT10).

Verdict?

A great car with very comfy seats, good sound system and everything you want. There is no question if I did a large motorway journey or big miles, this car would be perfect.

But?

It just wasn't a big enough improvement over mine to justify the cost to change - which means the E55 is a fantastic car and has it all - rather than the S being cr4p. I hate the wood on the steering wheel and I've already taken an expensive 6 year old Merc to 11 - why bother doing it all again on a more expensive, anecdotally less-reliable gearbox'd luxo barge?

Although this car was well clear of the M273 issues according to the serial number, I'm still not keen on the ABC.

Running at 388BHP and 100KG heavier or so, it felt so lardy compared to mine - which would have been fine had it been exceptional in every other department. ABC was good but also weird.

Bottom line is, I would miss my car too much - despite it's quirks.

Thanks to SPX for talking sense in to me and helping me finally decide! Cheers mate! :thumb:

No worries John, just don't forget I'm first in line when the time comes!

I absolutely love the merc, unfortunately my oh doesn't, it's too low for her and she won't drive it ( yeeeeessss), however as we are both retired now, I'll probably end up in a Honda CR-V or the like next.

2 years of C250 ownership and the time came to look around with a mid sized SUV the target for a number of reasons. Just about considered everything out there that can be considered premium (discounted your Xtrails, Kuga types early on). Seriously looked at Q5, XC60, Discovery Sport, X3 and Toureg.

Ordered the GLC even though there were cracking deals on XC60 and Toureg's available so I guess the answer is yes, I would have another.

James.

I'd like to stay with MB. But logical next step is a B class which is not for me for a number of reasons. Other MBs unaffordable.

Same here. My GLC is on order:D.

We already have an X-Trail & it tick all the boxes for my wife. But the Merc is the premium car vs the dog carrier/ van/ tip run.

Good luck:crazy:

After my experiences with the S210, I always swore that I'd never have another Merc. Then, I went and bought a facelift W211. There's just something about the bigger Mercs that makes them so attractive, even if reliability can be somewhat questionable. As for my next car, who knows? It largely depends upon circumstances; I quite fancy an S-Class, or a CL, or a SLK, or another E!?! Too many choices!

Well I hope you are sitting comfortably...
I bought a new 124 E250D in 1996 one of the very last, sadly I went for a manual version, within 28kmls it had 2 clutch slave cylinders 2 clutch master cylinders and a centre propshaft bearing, other than that and its wayward high speed stability it was fine.

I then got a 2yr old W211 E270 CDI with 15k on the clock, this car was very little trouble in the 2yrs and 18kmls that I owned it, the only faults I had was a battery fail and a burst Intercooler pipe and 2 Oxygen sensors in the exhaust but it was a very nice car.

Next I bought a CLS320 CDI with 25km on the clock and the only problems I had with this car in the 20kmls that I owned it was 2 Oxygen sensors and 6 Glowplugs, this was my favourite Mercedes.
I then decided to buy an 2008 Jaguar XF 2.7d with 17kmls on the clock this very early model suffered from a diff problem which caused the oil seals to leak but it was eventually ( I say eventually because the Dealer was rubbish) repaired under warranty by Jaguar and I enjoyed 3yrs of reliable ownership.

Due to our Local Jaguar Dealer being rubbish I decided to return to the only other make of car I liked and always wanted I bought a MY2012 Mercedes S350 cdi Bluetec privately with 25kmls on the clock and full Mercedes service history,
sadly within 1000mls the dashoard flagged up its engine management light,
I have a Delphi 150 code reader which told me it was an upstream Nox sensor failure, this sensor was over £400 from Mercedes but I eventually located one from Germany for a bit less, this was fitted and the car was fine for 500mls,
Then the dash flagged up the management light and my code reader told me it was the Downstream Nox sensor this time..I contacted a Mercedes Indie who told me that these sensors were a problem and they needed changed in pairs, so another £400
later all was well.
The car went well for the next 6kmls then the gearbox decided that if you used kickdown it would allow the engine to just redline then slam hard into the next gear, the slam was so hard I was worried it could damage the diff, so I gave it to my Indie who changed the autobox oil being the 7G+ used the green oil, he also done adaptions via Star sadly it was never cured of this fault even after 3 tries by my Indie and around £350 in labour.

Another few thousand miles were covered and the ABS light came on so 2 front ABS sensors were fitted (need replaced in pairs) at around £120 each grr. these cured the ABS problem and all was well for a few more thousand miles.

One morning I started the car up and the radio (Harmen Kardon) came on full volume the crackled and went of with the dashboard stating Device Unavailable,
I checked the optical loop and came to the conclusion the Logic 7 Amp was the culprit I took it to my work and put our Audio Engineer onto it and he resoldered a few surface mount components and checked the main board for any liquid ingress / corrosion which can be a problem on the W221 but all was well in this respect unfrtunately without any service information the fault was impossible to locate.
Eventually after Mercedes offering a reconditioned unit for £1300 !! I found a company called Softelectronic in Bulgaria who offered to repair it for £361 all in including
postage, so I sent it off and got it back within 1 week duly repaired and working with a 1 yr warranty. I finally thought brilliant all should now be well and I can enjoy my lovely S Class. sadly this was short lived as 3 weeks later the Amplifier started crackling and distorting again and the Air conditioning started playing up so that was the last straw.
I contacted a Jaguar Dealer some 80mls away who have a good reputation and asked if they would accept the S Class PX against another Jaguar, they said they would accept it even with the faulty Amp as they would be putting the car into auction anyway and they gave me a reasonable PX against a Lovely Jaguar XF-R Sport in Porcelain white with a 2 year warranty.

I have had the Jag for 4 weeks now and love it as if its a reliable as the last XF I will be a happy chappie.

So if I was asked if I would buy another Mercedes the answer would be Not on your nellie.
I used to love Mercedes cars and am not easily put off by small faults and foibles but the S350 was not the car I thought it should be the 350CDI was also a gruff lump compared to the Jaguar and the 8 speed box in the Jaguar is absolutely sublime.

My experience of Mercedes has been pretty much entirely positive.

i bought my CLS63 back in summer 2015 and I'm still in love with it. Admittedly I don't do mega miles in it so it's something to savour for the good weather.

My E320 (W211) is the one that's nailed it for me. I picked it up as a daily car, to be a family car, mile muncher and it's superseded all of my expectations. It's comfortable, surprisingly quick, economical and so far completely reliable.

I'll have a service carried out soon, I'm looking to freshen it up with a new set of alloy wheels and will carry on using it until I'm in a position to spend a bit more cash on a daily car, which will be another Merc. :thumb:

I would have agreed with you Alex prior to owning my S Class, I loved the car until it tried to bankrupt me. glad yours is going well and long may it continue.

I loved my s211 e320 cdi, as above exceeded all expectations and more!

I also love my w211 e55 its far to say its cost me quite abit but most of that was down to normal wear n tear stuff except one which was the Powered centre console. No big deal £140 later and all good.

Despite both 211's being early examples i haven't had any electrical faults and neither have been rusty, So i don't know why people say they suffer from the above.

I wont be changing brands anytime soon, If funds allow the next car will possibly be a e63 Bi-turbo.

Yes I aagree.

I loved my S211 and miss it dearly. It was actually it my opinion one of the best cars on the road. The whole package is hard to beat. The guy who has myn now is knocking on 198k.

Your next car WILL be a 212 63tt !

Watch this space though. If in a years time I'm after sympathy where my wallet has taken a pummelling I may have a different attitude haha. :)

Thing is I half expect my CLS to be expensive, it's an AMG and in return it gives me a lot of pleasure so I'm cool with the costs. The E is the 'sensible' car so I hope it stays that way.

That said my other half just paid out £600 on her SL350 to replace a module that controlled the roof and electric boot so rough with the smooth! :D

For me it really depends on what is about that fits my needs at the time.

I got mine because I wanted another 4 seater convertible. I would have got another Saab 9-3 but they had gone out of production so I had a look around. As we have a teenager I also needed on that had a reasonable amount of leg room in the back, so it needed to be of a decent size. Having looked at what was available it came down in the end to a choice between the Audi A5 S-Line or the E class AMG Sport models. The Audi felt like you sat on it, whereas the Merc at least felt like you were in the car. The Audi felt more up to date all round, just not that comfortable.

So I went for the E-Class. It has been very reliable, although it has turned out to be as characterless as I feared it would.

So, I would not discount another, although the next generation E class convertible looks like it fell from the ugly tree and hit most branches on the way down. This trend of make every Mercedes look the same and you have to play spot the difference to see what model it is, and them all resembling something Volkswagen would put out does put me off.

I thought I could live with a car with less character, but I am feeling this is not as easy and will put this higher up the list next time.

I loved my W211 and my CLS both were excellent cars and relatively trouble free, but the S Class was a massive let down reliability wise.
