Yorkshire YOMP 2012 - Driving Tour

For anyone interested in a day out in Derbyshire before this tour, a trip to the Peak district caverns and mines might be interesting.
One could then stay overnight at Castleton or Bamford and be right on the doorstep for the morning meet. You could even do budget accomodation in a Youth Hostel if so desired.

A trip up Winnats pass from Speedwell Cavern...which is actually a mine, not a cavern...

I thought about putting winnats pass in the original route but from where it ends its difficult to pick up the rest of the route I had and hit the lunch stop on time. It's a great driving road though, thanks for posting DM :thumb:

Driving up Winnats pass isn't particularly interesting, it's just moderately steep so good for a thrash, Snake pass is much more interesting to drive.

A laden lorry came down Winnets while I was there. He made sure he was in very low gear and kept it below about 10-15mph max with the brakes on all the way.
you're not supposed to take anything heavier than 7.5 Tonnes up or down.

Just had an amazing week in N yorkshire/Durham borders. We didn't see a cloud all week and the temperature was usually between 20c and 21c all day.
It was fabulous to be able to drive on scenic roads with little or no traffic.
Did Buttertubs and Crackpot and found another good road from Stanhope to Bowlees over the moors. One gate to get through which had a puddle that I didn't see - result unhappy other half!! This road was not suitable for all cars as the surface had disappeared in some places, but for leisurely 15 - 20mph motoring it was OK.and the views were marvellous.
I just wished that I had taken the SLK instead of the Peugeot, but boot space was at a premium so it wasn't possible.
Roll on the end of May.
Now, when are we going to get a sight of the Yorkshire Yomp route? I want to drool for a month at least.

After discussion at the Curry GTG Thursday, I'm just trying to take a bit of time out of the middle section by putting us back on A roads instead of B as there is currently too much driving to take advantage of the scenery and it would not allow photo stops on this section. I will publish the route very shortly I promise :thumb:

Only 5 weeks to go. WHERE?

Ian, booked the Lady Blower inn for the Friday 25th mate. After the tour, just going to head up the road, will see my mate on Friday in York on way down I think.

We are there too. See you for a drink in the bar maybe.

Hi guys

I'm still in South Africa but will be home Wednesday but fly to the States Saturday so I will publish the route before I depart, it's all done just needs a bit of tidying up to send out to you

Watch this space:thumb:

*** / BEJ - have also booked the Ladybower Inn for the 25th so will see you there, but probably not until later in the evening as I don't expect to get away from Edinburgh until after 17:00.

Yep, leaving after work, Gmaps wants to take me via Manchester pretty much not the 66/A1.

It will do. Snake pass runs from Manchester to Sheffield and Ladybower is about half way along.

Best way down the M6 then M61 round M60, up M67 head for Glossop then snake pass A57 in reverse to what we will run it and Ladybower Inn on right:thumb:

See HERE

You prob looking at 3.75 hours. I do our Paisley to Manchester office in 3 comfortable :-)

Will post full route of YOMP later just putting the finishing touches to it

Just remember 50 mph speed restrictions are now in force for the whole of the Snake Pass from Ladybower to Glossop.

The Final Route (at last)

OK boys and girls after comments and requests below is the final route, the link will take you to Google maps and you can print full turn by turn directions from there.

LINKY

I have now driven the route twice once in tourist mode and drive time was 6 hours 40 mins and once in "race" mode and the drive time was 6 hours 5 mins. so allowing for a 30 min coffee stop in the morning, a 2 hour lunch and a 30 minute stop in the afternoon we are on for a full 9-10 hour day. Join wherever you want, leave wherever you want

There's no rules or regs you all have the route but it would be good if we all met up at the lunch stop and at the end for a drink, not compulsory but just in the spirit of the club.

Don't forget the camera, hopefully the weather will be good to us and it's an 8am start at Yorkshire bridge Inn Ladybower. Morning Coffee stop is the Little Chef at Skipton (point D) Lunch at Hawes (Point G) and afternoon coffee stop Helmsley market place (Point I)

I'll send out my contact details by PM but could we now have a confirmed list of runners and riders please:)

Any chance of a few post codes for those of us whose wives do not like to read the map and would prefer to look at the view.
Possibly coffee, lunch and tea stops and maybe a few in between.
