C350e owners club

Well my car has arrived. Had I not cracked my phones camera yesterday i'd show pics (so will get some tomorrow).... I'm a bit confused and miffed after the first drives, its partially great and well, partially not so great, so far.

The car turned up dirty as expected. (back of a trailer from Newcastle to Worthing would do that..) And of course you don't get the garage hand over from a delivery driver, so was left a little blind in how to use the abundance of settings etc.

I've figured out the modes etc, and the drive is wonderful. Please bear in mind my comparisons will be against the Mk7 VW gold GTD that i've just handed back, and so far, the golf is on top... Due to absolute simplicity. The C350e seems so far, to be missing some absolutely basics that came on the GTD. (A car under 2 thirds of the price).

Ok, it might be a bit harsh, but i'll put a few of my ramblings down and hoping most if not all or sortable or a mistake on my behalf.

1) Parking sensors? - surely this is at standard? - yes the reverse camera works, and there is a piddly little display with a yellow line. But no audible noises at all, and nothing to indicate how far away you are at all?

2) Cruise control... Please please tell me this thing can brake when it sees a car in front? I have to admit, the website/builder/guides etc, for the car so useless in telling you what all the optional extras and things do, that i couldn't actually figure out at the time if this was standard or part of that expensive extra. Essentially i got a basic cruise control working by luck (no idea how it turned on yet!) - the stick on the left of the wheel seems to have a mind of its own. But no radar or equivalent, and no auto speed adjustments to the car in front. (I just have the premium plus pack with dark windows... so guessing i mis-specced a vital and obvious function?!). Urghhh! Frustrating.

3) whilst not so difficult to use generally, it is seriously missing the touch screen of other simpler cars. The mouse control thing is ok'ish, but not common sense.
The menu hides everything, and by going to settings i would expect to see an audio settings menu, etc etc, but nooo thats hidden in some stupid symbol on either the radio or media symbol? - i eventually found a basic menu with the treble / bass etc, but well, not much in there. (Should i turn on surround sound - really unsure if it was beneficial or not?)

4) The help menu / manual. This is seriously slow, and well, again finding things is quite painful. As i've had all of the above i tried it, and well it takes so long to find any useful information, it might as not be there. (I mean i want to find parking noises / beeps / acoustics, and it spurts about parktronic, or assist this, assist that? - urm... i want to know how to turn the blips and bleeps on?! The voice control takes forever to loop through its options, but well, none of them where what i wanted, and well... i have a feeling that one will never get used again.

5) - why does it display kmph on the screen? i want mph! I have selected mph in the fiddly settings somewhere (no idea how to get back there)
I would love to customise the trip screen so i could see the energy usage, the current speed and some more info, but i think most cars these days dont let you and only show you one bit of info at a time.

Ok, there are some great things, the seat memories, the drive comfort, the electric engine (so far). The fuel consumption was about 13.9 after mainly driving in charge so i could charge it up enough to show the missus the silence... hoping that improves somewhat on the 60mile return trip tonight - in hybrid :)

It picked up the 32gb on the meomry card straight away, and the sound is ... hmmm average.. I'm most definitley not an audiophile, but was expecting some burmeister magic... (Ooops, expectations again).

The car looks stunning, paint / seats are all great and i'm hoping the other issues will fade away soon.

As i said, hoping these are just ramblings, and the good will out-weigh the bad eventually. Will update after the drive later - off to the cotswolds tomorrow for the weekend. Lets see how she goes! :)

Any help or support with the above issues are appreciated! (First one to agree with me mis-speccing the cruise control options gets a snarl from me :P - and mercedes will get a wtf and a sigh....)

edit - no temperature show... bahhhhh....

hmmm and meh... no Driving Assistance package.. = no basic functions, something i used every day but hidden in jargon on their optional extras... really really annoyed with that one.... what use is cruise control with out the radar bits... seriously annoyed with both myself and Mercedes awful information pages.....

Nice, glad yours has arrived.

re. parking sensors, mine (with 360 cams) has to get very close (~1ft) before it makes any noise. There are indicators on the centre screen and there is a light above the rear window.

re. cruise. I didn't go for full auto. It will only slow down automatically in E mode, not others. It does it quite close too..

I've found the Burmeister very subtle in its awesomeness! Pick something with some bass, or a nice rich orchestral piece and wallow in it. Its much less clear cut on rock/indie type music.

Enjoy

The first thing that happened was that the 13amp charger made a fuse popping sound and stopped working when plugged in. Then a few days later the Rolec charger at home kept tripping. So cannot charge now. Everything else seems to work.

@noobmonkey..

I too am swapping from a GTD to the 350. I can remember vividly when the golf first arrived I was ready to burn it out or drive it into the nearest river. This was due to the frustrations in getting the various electronic gadgets to do what I wanted them to do at the time I wanted them to do it, for example releasing the electric handbrake, which doesn't automatically release without your seat belt in. (When reversing...before the holier than thou's get on the case..)

The 20 or so buttons on the steering wheel were also a source of frustration especially the adaptive cruise and phone, then there,s the stop start, resetting tyre pressures, sync'ing phones and so on.

The point I making is to give yourself a bit of time to get used to the different systems, they eventually become second nature rather than a pain. it took me a good 3 months before I was happy with the golf. On a side note a colleague has just got rid of his golf and he still couldn't work the hill start on the handbrake after 2 years.

Btw if you see a brilliant blue 350 in a river in the next few weeks....lol

Thanks Derek,

After the longer drive last night, i've calmed down a little. Managed to get nearer 24mpg doing 70ish miles. The parking sensors do work with some more thorough testing, but have to admit, not as good as the VW's.

Ha - when you actually see the sensor by the back window - it does suddenly make more sense though! :) - i'll take that one - and much happier :0

Still annoyed with my mis-speccing - but i think that is due to the pretty awful website information. When speccing the car, the further info buttons display nothing, and the optional extras PDF is pretty lame at best. They have a lot of work to do do make it easier for people to understand the terminology.

Just copied some better quality music across and will try the sounds again. Its not bad, i just suppose at the price of the system i was expecting more. (Oddly enough, no idea what though!)...

Thanks B33fy, really appreciate your post. Agree entirely. My frustrations are lessing, but getting used to the system and buttons layout is still quite painful.
Also having to go find a garage as the passenger door doesnt really seem to shut properly. I should have noticed when the door was slightly open on delivery!

After that second run, i've come to a few further conclusions.
I can live with the button layout. (Still took me 30 seconds to figure out how to turn the fans on! :P)

The voice control is diabolical! - Please can someone try to get it to goto crawley.... It was insistant that i was saying Corley (Where on earth is corley?!)

Essentially the four attempts to find somewhere failed, and we had to stop, use a phone and find a post code etc.

When getting directions to gatwick, the easies way was using the POI's - much better but still 2 minutes to find it, needs to be much much quicker.

And again, settings for things. How do you shut the Nav lady up?...
I'm wondering if common sense would be useful for these, like options to say, only speak in the last x miles of the trip - as most people know how to get out of their own drive, but need directions nearer?

Still yet to find a volume for her, and well, at present i'm using my phone as a sat nave - as well - its quiet and just gets on with it.

My biggest gripe is still the Display in KMPh....
So i normally love having the MPH screen on the display cluster in front of me, however, the sat nave bit looks good. The only problem is, it displays KMPH below, which is utterly useless...

Again, WHY!? Why on god green (English version of a ) earth would i need that - unless abroad.

So.. in my brain. I expect a simple, oh scroll to settings and change, but nope... that seems way to complicated for mercedes.

I've worked in It for 20 years, and now a tech architect. Yet i get more frustrated with Complicated tech then the nurses and doctors i support.

Its does seem as though they moulded this car almost perfectly and just threw together the system right on the last hour.

So still frustrated, going to go to the nearest MB garage today (20 miles away) - and hope they can look at the door, tell me why its so complicated and help me out a bit. + enable connect me. Although being a lease car, i'm sure this will also be complicated.

In good news. Wow this thing is comfortable and such a beautiful place to be in. The build seems pretty good. I managed to fit 3 suitcases in the boot! (Was shocked at that!).

Comfort / Hybrid mode is a joy. The swap from electric to petrol is almost un-heard. Sport + mode is fun but dangerous! :p

I find myself driving like miss daisy, which oddly enough is satisfying, just because i can and its so smooth!

The rear-camera is so much fun to use, and its kinda scary how quick it looks like when you reverse, but no issues and great at night too.

So the car is warming on me, and every time i look at it i love it...
Might petition Merc to sack anyone who does HID (Human interface design) at the company.... But other then that, better! :)

Appreciate the replies v much though!

Noobmonkey..
If you press mute on the steering wheel while she is taking then she will mute, I don't like her barking orders constantly either!

weird enough that just muted the music? hmmmmm Did try the obvious, maybe my timing was off?

It has to be while she is speaking otherwise it will mute the music.

Ahhhh (is that as she is attempting to say something and spits out nonsense?) :P - which is quite funny the first time :)

Just a thought, try saying Kensington? Or Cote D'Azur? The local Mercedes dealership in Crawley lists themselves as Gatwick. Ditto the BMW place which is pretty much in the centre of the town. Could be a security feature? ;)

re: Burmeister ... hope I'm not stating the obvious, but you have to enable once for each music source in the options I think. I know you have to enable it on the Radio and the Media individually.

Agree re: the in-car manual/help system .. unbelievably slow.

Wish parking sensors were more sensitive too ... I keep worrying they are not working before I get to < 1ft away.

On the positive side I tried the parking assistance today for the first ... worked perfectly with me just sitting there shifting between D and R = happy Jeppo !

Hands free access on the c350e estate

I.e. boot opening by kicking motion under the rear bumper....Has anyone got this working? I suspect the module doesn't exist due to battery storage but can't find this in the guide..

Is part of the keyless go package I believe - included with premium and premium plus

Just tested. The foot boot open works on mine. Pp with no other extras. Just stand 30cm away and kick your leg under the boot sensor to the left of the numberplate. And it shuts doing the same too :)
