F1 2024

So, just 16 former F1 drivers at Le Mans this year. Given I have run teams or cars on 16 occasions at Le Mans in the past it is hardly a surprise that I have run and got to know a fair few of them. Everyone of them different, but all very highly skilled racing drivers.
Interesting that Porsche have not selected Vettel due to him having insufficient time in the car.

Yes, I suspect that actually driving the car would be no problem for Vettel, even if they are bigger and slightly heavier beasts.
However, learning to share the car and the experience of sharing the circuit over 24 hrs with lots of other drivers who are not F1 drivers might come as a bit of a shock.
I seem to remember a certain Alonso returning to F1 afterwards as a better and more rounded driver.

If you are keen on MotoGP, this news may surprise you....or not:dk:
Ducati kept him hanging on a string for too long. I don't blame him for joining a team that have won races and can give him a factory bike.
After Bagnaia, he is the fastest Ducati rider out there right now.
It takes the pressure off Ducati and they can announce Marquez as next years factory rider when they like.
Bastianini is the unlucky guy, probably back to the Pramac sister team.

OK, that opens the door for Marc to join the factory team, but who gets the bullet from Aprilia and Marc's seat at Pramac?? Brad's been a bullet off the start line this year but has not had the long term race pace - but IIRC that's an Aprilia problem rather than rider caused. Is it Aleish who is retiring, can't remember for sure who the other works Aprilia rider is! One thing for sure - Moto GP is a dmaned sight more interesting than F1!!

Oops, should have read the article first as Marc is currently Gressini not Pramac, the opening is because Aleix is retiring, it's merry-go-round like F1!!

Aleix Espargaro is retiring at the end of 2024 freeing up the seat at Aprillia.
It's a great signing for them for Jorge Martin to partner Vinales in 2025.

Brad Binder rides for KTM Chris.
As above, I think Enea Bastianini is the unlucky guy to make way for Marquez and he will go back to the Pramac team in Marquez place.

I understand that far from being the unlucky, Enea is likely to find himself on a factory KTM alongside Pedro Acosta. Not a bad landing if it happens...:dk:

Great result for him if that transpires. KTM are right up there with Ducati.

Had one of these on the test fleet when I was out in Hamburg in '09...

Also had a Ducati 1098R in the workshop too.

Didn't get to drive either unfortunately, though I'm not qualified to ride the bike anyway.

Alpine boss Bruno Famin is dead straight. He warned there would be consequences after Ocon's ridiculous Monaco manoeuvre.
I spent a whole day with him about 20 years ago trying to sell him a Le Mans car design when he headed up the Peugeot Le Mans effort. That pitch never came off, but he was firm but fair, and I have to say I would agree with his latest decision.

Did anyone spot that Pol Espagaro, riding as a test rider for KTM equalled the highest speed ever on a MotoGP bike during the Mugello event.
227.1mph and he was only 18th:doh:

Getting 'em round the twisty bits is always the challenge for bikes compared to F1. Bikes 'only' manage just over 1G in the corners (and under braking too I think). Considering they (pretty much*) only have mechanical grip, that is nevertheless impressive.

*I'm assuming the current trend for aero devices on bikes is for some aero-downforce generation.

Edit - Looks like they are now up around 1.5G in the corners, 1.2G acceleration and up to 2G under braking. Quite amazing really.

227mph on 2 wheels - those riders must have never mind big, massive brass ones! The damage that could be done binning it at that speed - well, it'd be terminal! I take my hat off to them - or wonder if they should be referred to a suitable medical consultant!!

Not quite, have a look at this. 7.5 minutes long but does explain in detail.

The super bikes are doing something like 205 mph in the TT. The TV helicopters can't keep up with the bikes.
