Have You Seen Any Interesting Cars On The Road Lately?

Dad had a Mk 1 1600GT when I was learning to drive, had it from brand new (HGJ756C), I should have bought it from him in 1973 when he got the Austin 1800 but had nowhere to store it.

Anyone remember these? Spotted in Norwich. MK1 Lotus Cortina.

If the lowered suspension is original I think that's a GT. AFAIK all Lotus Cortinas used the 2-door body and this is a 4-door. Also listed as a 1500 engine when the Lotus Cortinas were 1600, and it was originally orange (all Lotus ones were white).

It's also missing the green stripe down the side that the Lotus variety had! Remember seeing them racing at Brands, often in very mixed classes with everything from souped up minis to Ford Galaxies! Hilarious differences at Paddock Hill, roller skate minis to wallowing Galaxies.

If you get the chance you’ll see them racing at Brands in May as part of the Masters Pre-66 class. I always try to go, great racing with Lotus Cortina’s, Minis, Galaxies, the odd Mustang etc.

I've been to The Masters Historic at Brands, it was epic but we needed ear defenders near the track! Must look up the May meet.

I'm at a funeral right now!... just what i wanted to be doing on my birthday! The hurse is a Mercedes 219 CLS based one! Sorry about poor quality... did not want to make it obvious I was taking it!

More likely a W211 E-Class with a W219 CLS front grafted on. MOT says E-Class.

Interesting..... not sure why anyone would do that... personally I think the 211 front is far better looking.

This came up on my Facebook and as it’s got a good backstory I thought I’d share it. Maybe Mactech can add to it.

The Iconic Auctions website that listed it for sale a few months ago said it was built with a “nod” to the Bentley Speed 8. I think that’s a polite way of saying that it’s an Ultima GTR with a Bentley logo on the Ultima windscreen and another on the Chevrolet engine.

The Ultima GTR is a truly incredible car and really doesn’t need to pretend to be anything else.

@Mactech will confirm but my (limited) understanding is that this (below) is the Bentley Le Man Protyotype used for aero and chassi development but was equipped with a Cosworth engine - I posted photos of it a couple of weeks ago.

And here’s the Cosworth engine in situ for the purposes of protoype testing only, replaced with an Audi Le Mans derived engine which was very heavily re-engineered for the racing Bentley.

I just did a quick Google and the (previous?) owner designed the Bentley-inspired bodywork and it was made by ACE Fibreglass, so not quite what the Facebook post suggests.

Yes, the Ultima was nothing more than a nod to the racing Bentley. The claims that it was used for 'early aero tests' is a complete fabrication.
The reality is that we had a big enough job to correlate the 40% wind tunnel model with the real car. Why would we believe anything from something entirely unrelated?
The very first car here as a really strange history in that it was build with VW funding and the intention of putting an atmo racing W12 VW engine it!
That engine did actually run in a prototype Lola car once, but was so heavy, and huge that it had no place in a racing car. So the idea was shelved and a company within the VW group sought to take on the project in 2000. This car and the 002 chassis numbered cars ended up with a engine compartment far too large for the V8's they would run with, and cooling designed for an atmo not a turbo engine (no intercooler provision) This is a very unique car and there are no carry over parts except the wheel nuts, screen and nose box which carry over to any of the other 2001/2002 Bentleys...and that was because I had to homologate the car to the 2000 regulations (in Jan 2001!) to have any chance of building cars with turbo V8 engines for the 2001 race.....
