how long for the engine to get hot? E320CDi

I'm hunting for my sunglasses I think I've been blinded by science, and one thing I never was is a civil engineer  ;)

Just been reading about the 1934 Bentley's that had variable vane's on the radiator, I would assume the Rolls Royce would have similar technology? Although this was 1934, I suppose Malcolm was divorcing his second wife round-about then? :D

RR cars up to 1930 had manual controls for the shutters, the 1931 models had auto shutters to keep the exact temp.

Mike Hawthorn was killed when it is thought that he pulled the radiator shutter knob by mistake.

The other thing that killed shutters off was car design, OK on a 202 or 124 you can just blank part of the rad off, with all other models since it is impossible to get to the front of the rad, so you could not do it anyway

(makes a quick exit)

Surely enough is enough?

Do all engineers like to score points off each other?

John

That is called attempting to make a living.

Actually I think that Malcolm and Brian are going to have a continued educated discussion on this subject and if not Brian says he is going to bash Malcolm's head in with a blanked off radiator.

In mistake for what? the bloody ejector seat?

Lot's of thoughts about the Hawthorn accident - one is that the windscreen was shattered by a rifle bullet - truth is it seems he went a bit too fast.

How many has he got through then ?

I cant find it now, but that was the thought of some.

Actually the MK1 Jag was a beast in the rain , the rear track was narrower than the front and was modified within weeks to the MK11, a very different car

Especially on skinny old tyres . There was some suggestion that he was using a hand throttle but there can be no substance to that .

It's what can happen if you race on the road -

I'm still interested to know whether allowing the glow plug to go out before trying to start the engine has cured the problem?

Can you keep it on topic please John? your meanderings do nothing to help .

could this be related to hawthorn bend at brands hatch?

hope I never get a bend named after me
Mike Hawthorn died driving his 'own car' on the A3 at a location known as the Hog's Back. From memory the car was owsned by Jaguar but Hawthorn had his garage modify the car to a racing spec that made it more suitable for the circuit as opposed to normal road use. There are lots of opinions about what caused this accident but my own view is that it was a single carriageway, and Hawthorn at times drove cars on the public highway as quickly as he drove them on the race track. In 1959 there was no 60mph speed limit and the practice of driving too fast for the conditions was something some folks did not believe in.

Sorry:D

Let the engines tick over after start for 10 mins before moving off. Temp problem solved.

I go to work - 3 miles, but takes about 15 minutes in the trattic.

my car is just about up to temp by then.

maybe the thermostat is stuck?

my wife's petrol CLK230 heats up in a fraction of the time.

My, hasn't this thread gone on a long time and got acrimonious along the way!

From your description of your journey to work, you spend most of the time in a traffic jam (the average speed is 12 mph). In those circumstances, blanking off the radiator (either in whole or in part) is an irrelevance. Due to the high thermal efficiency of your engine, for at least two thirds of your journey the thermostat will be closed. Even when it opens, due to the very low speed the airflow across the radiator will be negligible.

The reason your wife's car will warm faster on that same journey is the lower thermal efficiency of a petrol engine and because the engine is smaller there is less metal to warm up (and quite possibly a smaller capacity cooling system).
