Was driving down M1 today towards London, speed reduced to 40. I was in the middle lane. A man on a motorbike with a green jacket (no police markings etc) with a go-pro on helmet aggressively came next to my car and started beeping me to pullover whilst screaming. He then tried to make me pull over. As he wasn't a police officer I didn't stop. He then came beside my car in traffic I opened my window and he said "you'll be getting a £100 fine you were staying in the middle lane" and then drove off.

Does anyone have any idea what this is? He's not police he has a go-pro and is wearing a hi-vis jacket. Has he got any power?

Cheers

I wouldn't bother much as you said he wasn't identified as agent of the law,so it will be another biker that think he drives a lorry!lol

I seriously doubt that an off-duty police officer would do this, start telling people off for minor motoring offences.

Of course any citizen can submit evidence of an alleged offence to the police. They may then take action, or decide it's not in the public interest.

Cheers guys, it was traffic reduced to 40. So we all stayed in lane. Oh well I guess this guy has too much time on his hands, he could have caused an accident moving from the right lane to left lane and back trying to get me to stop!

Middle lane hogging pisses people off, regardless of the speed limit. Move left.

As above, except he had no right to order you about...was there no space to your left?

Was your coat caught in the door and flapping about in the wind?

I find it fascinating how most people will slow down to below a reduced speed limit on a motorway then back up to 80ish when clear of the lower limit. Have I been getting it wrong all these years and when the limit says 40 I should drive at an indicated 38 instead of keeping around 44 to allow for speedo error and leeway? Neither have I been aware of the law that says I should stay in the lane I was in at the start of the speed reduction, instead of moving to the left lanes with the others who choose to drive at less than the limit.

The left lane was completely blocked, because there was a queue to exit to the next junction. So I was forced to stay in middle!

Quite often on Smart Motorways you are instructed to remain in your current lane. Last night driving down the M11, I stuck to the middle lane as in my opinion it would not have been safe to use lanes 1 or 3 due to excessive surface water.

Just a prat on a bike, then.

It's always a "judgement call" about when to fall back into a lane to the left, and when to hold in the present lane. If there's space to the left, and we won't be coming out again very soon, then we should fall back into the lane.

If there's light traffic in the left lane, doing 50, a couple of hundred yards ahead, and we're doing 70, then it would make sense to hold. Half a mile, it would be worth dropping back. Inbetween? Well, that's where the judgement comes in ...

It sounds as though the biker took a different judgement. So what.

Didn't have the word 'POLITE' printed on the back of his jacket in the Police colours and text did he?

I've encountered similar on the M1 after working in London, so it would be Northbound. Also noticed same bloke on the way to work in London

Yeh Ash was commuting from J15A (northampton) to London. Didn't notice jacket text but it was a high vis one. Was a very angry guy Haha :)

Haha probably ;)

In my experience it takes two to tango & where there is smoke there is usually fire. It seems very odd that this biker got as irate as you describe him because you were driving down the middle lane next to a queue of cars leaving the motorway, effectively next to a blocked lane.

Fair enough to say, however what would I gain by coming on here pretending that I was in the right if I was in the wrong? I'm here solely to share my experience as honestly as possible and see if anyone else has had similar issues.

A guy on a bike with a high viz & camera and I'd guess the bike was of a very similar style to a cop bike...I can picture it now, along with the warning of a fine being issued. Come on, it only needs one (thus no tango) and we've all met them in one form or another and they all seem to be complete to55ers too.
