If only Nick would tell us on what authority he speaks. Twice now he has ducked an invitation to say where his passion comes from.

"Phone our main contact number 0141 532 2000. They can put you through to your local office"

I have , on less urgent matters , telephoned that number on different occasions . Also the listed numbers for individual stations connect to the force call centre after so many rings if no one is there to answer .

However , I am fairly sure these numbers connect to exactly the same operators who handle the 999 calls . I sometimes meet police control operators when they are at our ( Fire Service ) Operational Control Centre and will ask that question next time I see one of them .

The only differences are

a) I have to look the number up ( not convenient when driving )

b) I don't get the 999 operator who asks which service I require

c) The call is not free .

The police themselves ask that you don't ring 999 to report dangerous driving, as the 999 line is for emergancies.

It's common sense really, given that while you're on the phone moaning about poor driving you've wittnessed someone else could be trying to get through to report an axe murderer or a house on fire.

A reckless , drunk or dangerous driver is just as much of a menace ( and an emergency ) as an axe-murderer .

For a house on fire , you should not be telephoning the police :

IN CASE OF FIRE

GET OUT

STAY OUT

CALL THE FIRE BRIGADE

Let's see if we can keep this sh1t going for another 4 days. The intransigence on both sides is remarkable.

Derek, you did what you saw fit, well done.
Nick you disagree, well done.

Neither of you will see the others view point, so can we give it a rest.

I am not the one 'clutching at straws'

You are in a minority of one with your opininon on this subject .

It is becoming tiresome ; you are starting to sound like a broken record , as though repeating the same statements over and over somehow makes them more valiid . If you were adding something new to the debate with each subsequent post it would be worthwhile continuing , but you are not .

I will have no more to say on this matter .

It's incredible that many of the treads on here now degenerate into pages and pages of nit picking drivel instead of a few posts of light hearted banter about cars 'n stuff..

Get a life Guys..

Truly??

Nick Im unsure if you are job or not, however when I was on duty last week there were two case's when MOP had 999'd poor driving and resulted in the arrest for drink drive.

My position would be (again unsure if it is that of my service) that if you see driving that falls far below the standard of a careful and competent driver, you call 999. You could be preventing a death.

This post says it all to me from a serving officer, what more do you need to prove the correct course of action? If likely harm or life threatening then dial 999. Just like my previous post drink and drug drivers are often caught by a 999 call

I attempted via a 999 call to get the police to take action against what I presumed to be a certifiable maniac on the M1 in South Yorkshire, every bit as erratic and dangerous as the original example.
The response was "why are you bothering us, report it to your local police when you get home and why are you using a mobile whilst you're diving" all delivered with the amount of courtesy and gratitude as you can imagine.
Different standards on both sides of the law in Scotland I suspect!

If you give me the date and approx time I will take this up as it is clearly not an acceptable response, all calls are recorded. I find it hard to believe any emergency operator would ask why are you using a mobile whilst driving? since when did that become illegal? As I say give me the details and I will pass it on and have it investigated. As if this was the case clearly some re training is called for.

I'm just telling you what appears on almost every police force website:

"How to report bad driving

If you have been involved in an incident of bad driving which has not ended in a collision, call 0845 8 505 505, or visit a local police station to report the incident."

999 is for emergancies and should not be abused.

nick
your quote is written past tense, 'have been involved', refers to something that happened.

An emergency is current, ongoing.

Pontoneer's choice to decide his incident was in progress is clearly his choice, defensible, and acceptable to the police.

You are barking up the wrong tree here.

In your favour the police do state they prefer reports of 'expired' incidents to be passed on through their non emergency number.

So Nick, do you accept that you were wrong?:(
:)

I just think that if the blast is strong and close enough to blow your head protection off, you wont really have to worry about using your hands to hold it on?

I think Nick must be a defence lawyer. Next time i get pulled i will employ him to defend me. Just wait for the magistrate to drop off to sleep , and nip out the back door. Case closed.:dk:

This thread brings a whole new meaning to the term "You're Nicked"

:D
