Range of speed camera van surprising ....

I believe that is the reason for the 1Km limit as it is easy to see 1Km from a motorway bridge on a straight, but you are quite right the laser gun is for corroboration of a suspected offence. That throws up a whole grey area of civilian operated devices being used for prosecution, this is currently in European courts for a ruling

Thanks for that - a mine of useful information as usual........ My ticket was a bit sneaky (tho' I was speeding :o) off the A1 southbound on to the A14 near Alconbury and the van sits on the first bridge, effectively capturing the speeding motorists at about 850m as they come into view. What amazed me was that it took 0.3 of a second to lock a speed (it was the right speed) and the camera remains locked as he tracked me toward him. Seen the van a few times on the bridge since then. The officer explained everything to me as he ran through the film several times and it left me better informed but 60 quid poorer

Which is exactly why laser detectors (as oppsed to GPS-based warning devices) are a waste of money! By the time it goes off, you're nicked.

Precisely! Mine went off and I immediately slowed down, but knew that I had been caught. The helpfulness of Cambridgeshire police in explaining things when I asked to see the film (made an appointment) was surprising and very welcome. They're only doing their job, after all

Remember protection is better than cure, you will never get caught by laser with this device fitted LASERPROTECTOR been on my car 2 years never a NIP cameras on motorway bridges they just dont register, I tested it well with my local friends, the laser gun just cant break through, well recommended.:thumb:

Thanks - I decided that sticking a bit closer to the speed limits was a better, even if more boring, option :)

The link below claims it's a scam/doesn't work with "highly used laser guns" e.g. TraffiPatrol XR, SCS 102 or Nestor Speed Lidar Cameras. Are these non UK lasers

I think so all I can tell you for definite is the LTi 20:20, Lasercam, jenoptik and Kustom Prolasers can't break through it. Never heard of the ones above so maybe non UK and work on a different frequency?

I'm amused by the product page which carefully 'dodges' the real purpose for a device such as this, but then goes on to demonstrate where you could fit a parking sensor to a motorbike...

Going back to original question about the range, I saw a programme a few years back when cameras were fairly new, it was a bikers programme and they were trying to see how fast you would have to go to 'fool' the camera.

After several unsucessful attempts they finally acheived their goal at just over 160mph, the camera couldn't see the bike so the moral of the story is for us all to go out and get the speed limiters removed and drive flat out! :D

I think that's for Gatsos (which take two still pictures a specified time apart), rather than the mobile laser/video combo.

Didn't Top gear try this some years ago?

No matter what your speed, it won't stop you being pinged by a laser unless you have a rather dodgy garage door opener fitted and working (with due apologies to Flanaia 1) ;)

I have looked at this system previously.

Just how much grief would you get if stopped and they knew you had one of these?

Also, I was done for 49 in 40 at 550m just cresting the brow of a hill on a dual carriageway and am convinced that if I had indicated, stopped and turned right into a side road the video camera wouldn't have had the resolution to get my registration number at approx 500m.
Am I correct or just delusional?

How much it cost to take this type of a course?
