Swiss W124 500E - All new parts - £7950

Terry - you make a very valid point which is why i haven't really made any efforts to advertise the car officially....where would i find such a car again ? !! Black 040 500E with black leather and mint !

You make me realise how stupid it is to even consider selling it.

I'll have to build another garage to ensure it stays under cover when the Gemballa arrives !!

Sale off !!

Cheers Terry,

PS: I almost forgot.
I think you may have made a mistake in your post on the 1st or 2nd page, you pointed out that Swiss 500E's had taller gearing, giving a faster top end, well I think that may not be the case, I think this only applied to E60's and the gearing was actually shorter rather than longer which was the Swiss's idea because of their strict policy on speeding, their thinking being that the top end speed would not be as fast as with the standard gearing. This was the case with my second E60 (Swiss) which had higher revs than my 1st E60 (German) in top gear, but the acceleration of the Swiss car was much faster and 2 of the 3 E500E's I have owned, were Swiss supplied, but all 3 had the same ratio/gearing. I hope this helps, but this is my experience from owning swiss and german 500's and E60's.

I think i said the same thing, just terminology. Longer gearing for me means higher top speed but lower acceleration. A 2.82 diff (stock 500e) will give lower top speed but higher acceleration than a 2.65. But if you experienced that an E60 had higher revs at lower speeds than a stock 500E at same speed, then it must be the case that Swiss E60s had a ratio of 3.06.

Having investigated prices and available cars i thought that £12k was reasonable, almost a bargin.

I may just tempt you at some point in the new year.

very reasonable price.. its all too easy to say its too expensive but try looking for a decent one... even the ones at the silly priced dealers will not be in the condition of this one.

There are many ways of looking at it, you could buy many other cars for 12K but 500E's are hard to come by nowadays and 12K is cheap for a good honest example.

500E

"1991 MERECEDES BENZ 500E (W124) One of the first of this thoroughbred sport saloon. Only two Swiss owners from new. We bought this car from an Audi main dealer in Switzerland who had taken it in part exchange from the second owner. We drove it back and frankly could not believe just how well this totally original (paintwork & interior) car drives, with silent and faultless 320bhp V8 power transmitted through almost undetectable automatic gearbox changes. Upon closer, workshop examination once back at our base, we were flabbergasted to discover that apparently (unmistakeably) the whole of the mechanicals including the engine and all its ancillaries, the gearbox and prop-shaft appear to be brand new replacements. We have contacted the Swiss Audi dealer however as yet we have not been able to verify this. It is clear however that all the items concerned are new. We expect that this fact, together with the total and complete –to-date (09/ 07) Mercedes service history is why this 180k mile, immaculate and original example simply beggars belief both in terms of its quality and performance. Without question the most remarkable, unrestored, original Mercedes with this mileage that we have ever seen. Electric heated seats, full leather, ESR, OTG, FCA, 8 hole alloy wheels with new Michelin Alpine Pilots, not to be missed, truly a useable classic-for-life."

Now Im not that up on 500E prices, but this seems worth a punt? any opinions?

SORRY just realised posted in wrong section, should be in "Spotted on Ebay" - can mods please move thatnks!

Someone on another forum has recently driven this car. Apparently it has a misfire which they think could be related to the wiring loom.

Knowing nothing about engines what is the likely cost of repair?

( i appreciate may be impossible to guess)

Misfire could be a badly gapped spark plug (i.e. no gap !) or what can happen with the LH systems is when they sit around for too long doing nothing and the fuel becomes weak, causing a build up of vapour in the injections system which leads to misfire.

If it's wiring harness, budget circa 300gbp for each (there are two, a lower and upper). The wiring harnesses are the weak point on all pre 96 cars equipped with LH, the 500E situation is usually impacted more due to the tight engine bay giving rise to higher temps, which is what ruins these harnesses.

Thanks Talbir, so not necessarily a deal breaker then?

I'm starting to get the impression these are pretty good value to maintain, given the power and rarity.

I would get them to have the wiring looms changed though... takes the risk off..
