The EV fact thread

What's the sketch with the charger below? Two different connectors. Does that mean that two EVs with different connectors can simultaneously recharge at this station?

CCS on one side and Chademo on the other - this is a particularly old EV charger - Chademo isn’t used anymore.

Correct!

Still not getting the significance of two cables on one recharging station. Choice (CCS or Chameda) or, two EVs charging simultaneously (one CCS, the other Chameda)?

And he's absolutely right, as we've known from the beginning.

But European and North American voters have voted for the EV transition, to reduce the CO2 causing climate change and improve Energy Security.
I'm not so sure about the good ole boys being keen on ditching their V8 pick ups for EV’s though. Could be one of the reasons that Ford aren’t really big players in the market at the moment

Tell me about it.

The democrats fishing at the weekend in New England had plenty of anti-EV and anti-Biden stickers all over. Their huge fishing trucks It’s one of the many reasons Trump will triumph in ‘24.

But what will he do, once elected? Turn back the tide? Increase the trade war? And will California and the Teslerati just ignore him anyway?

One only has to spend just a few hours studying the Chinese 'economy' to realise what a complete clusterfruck it is . All lies.

Indeed. China's days of double digit GDP growth have gone, probably forever. Chinese stock markets have lost $6 trillion in 3 years, they are suffering deflation, have a debt crisis and the population is shrinking causing long term worsening demographics. I've already checked to make sure none of my investments have direct exposure to China although that won't help much if things get worse as the waves will wash all around the world. When one man rules everything, then the country becomes subject to his quirky biased decisions, look what a dumb pandemic they had which they have yet to recover from. The worlds manufacturers with any sense are diversifying away from China as as sole supplier as fast as they can.

None of China's problems are being caused by EV manufacturing but they may get desperate for exports and dump them at even lower prices.

I’d like to know where all the electricity will come from
Well, for a start we’re using 20% less electricity than we did two decades ago.

And then there’s all the new production capacity that’s come on line since then. Wind and solar farms everywhere

An amazing two fifths (41.8%) of the UK energy now comes from renewable sources.

Well seeing he hates China with a passion he’ll probably refuse to do anything about the environment until they reduce their production levels ( not that the Yanks will seek to benefit from that 😉😉😉).
Until then it’ll probably be V8’s all round, should the tree huggers object he’ll probably tax them and declare them to be public enemy No.1. I can hear the whooping and a hollering already

Don't forget Chinese bonds and real estate.

"A trillion here, a trillion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money" (To misquote Senator Everett McKinley Dirkson)

(to be fair, much of the near-shoring going on is more to do with political risk and the bruises of Covid-19, although it will only get worse when 47 becomes President.)

Not aimed at you specifically @190 but I’m getting dizzy. Weeks ago EVs were too expensive, days ago they we’re depreciating too much, now they’re being “dumped” at low prices, and soon they‘ll be dumped at even lower prices. I know it’s not (always 😀) the same people saying all of these state, ents, but they can’t all be right, surely :dk:

Where all our energy is coming from:

In the UK we have more than enough capacity. ......We use way less electricity that we used 20 years ago. and have much more generating capacity. The only issue there is if we have a heavy duty enough system to cope with lots of cars in the same street charging......but actual volume of electricity is not an issue.....even the National Grid says so and even say they could cope if we all went EV today........I know people will argue....but Id like to think that they would know.

I think that "lots of cars in the same street charging" is just as unlikely a scenario as everyone trying to fill-up with petrol at the same time.

How many city dwellers do 300 miles a day, every day? The majority of EV drivers will only need topping up every one or two weeks.

Agreed.....but I guess how many it would take to be too many will depend on the age of the street and its wiring. Where I live all the power wires are underground (with the phones and gas and water...all in the same pipe!!!) and the houses were built in the 60s....cant inagine we could flow a big total power ampage.

Charging speeds vary from 2-3kW on a granny cable, via 4.8kW on a lamppost charger, 7-11kW on a dedicated home charger, and then goes up to 50kW, 150kW, and 350kW. The last three won't be scattered in abundance around a residential street.

The grid can be made to adjust the chargers' capacity based on current load, i.e. between 3kW and 11kW. Ultimately, 3kW is essentially the same load as an electric kettle. The difference is that with EV chargers, the 'electric kettle syndrome' can me managed by software.

7-11kW on a dedicated home charger
and 11kW is only possible at houses with 3 phase which is rare for residential properties in the UK.
