The EV fact thread

As mentioned 11C is hardly 'winter'.
The test was done in January. Is that Spring, Autumn, or Summer round your way?

They explicitly said it was to test range in the coldest month of the year.

Ah I didn't realise that EV range was affected by the date ... that's even worse than I thought :D

The fact remains that the temperature during the test was a pretty mild 11C. Hope they were using summer tyres ;)

Agreed, considering most people don't like EVs 🤣 (Supposedly) 😉

People don't like the UK weather or politics either.

But they tend to disproportionately dominate conversation.

I would say EVs are rather more interesting than the weather or politics - and reasonably topical.

Indeed it was fairly mild for what used to pass as winter! That is the very reason we have an EV thread.....climate change!
Out here in the far east (of England!) we have had very few days that the temperature has been in single figures, so much so I have just removed the cans of ice remover and scrapers from the cars (despite one of them being an ICE car!) as they have never been used this year!
I did drive the EV in sub zero temps the 200 mile round trip to MK ,and guess what, the range was down by 20% on 'summer' motoring but that's exactly what I expected.

Further north, there hasn't to my knowledge been a day this year where the temps got out of single figures, 8C the highest. Six degrees C currently on what is a relatively mild day here. 11C is a gift to the EVs for the tests conducted.

I find it surprising that one of the most active threads currently on the forum is about EVs!
On a site decdicated to a manufacturer whose hybrids and EVs have ….

only enjoyed modest success to date.

(“Implementation lag” perhaps?)

An excellent reason to champion climate change !

(in Norfolk: not so much)

Yes, it tends to get cold the further north you are. Oddly, there has been a much higher take up of EV's in very chilly Scandinavian countries:dk:

Isn't Norway set to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars in just 9 months time leaving no choice apart from EV's for new car buyers.

Maybe.....although possibly all there EVs being pig ugly (even compared to their aesthetically challenged competition) may have affected sales slightly!!!

There are always oddities - Kinlochewe in the north west had a record temperature in January this year. ISTR it was just over 18 deg C !

EVs take off in Nordic countries with lots of cheap hydro-generated electricity... we have not had a bigger surprise since we learnt that in oil-rich Gulf countries, V8s sell like hot cakes. Must be another one for Tales of the Unexpected.

That's the situation in London, where I live:

And yes, a few days a year I throw caution to the wind, and venture out at 4⁰C, which is 3⁰ below the point where my summer tyres become hard and brittle and crumble as if they were immersed in liquid Nitrogen.

Except electricity prices have risen sharply in Norway since 2020, in no small part due to Norway exporting its formerly 'cheap' hydro generated electricity abroad (to the UK & Germany).

Probably not wimps like us. Two
flakes of Snow and Minus One, and the country's shut down.
(OK, slight exaggeration, but you get me meaning) 🙄🙂

Which is perhaps another example of why policy should not be set out from London - which in terms of practical use case and costs for transport is rather different from many other parts of the UK.

The winter tyre views and perspectives are in some ways analogous. The same sort of view can be taken in the other direction when those advocating winter tyres should be a legal requirement in the UK ignore the effective climate situation in the southern and urban parts of the UK.
