The EV fact thread

Except electricity prices have risen sharply in Norway since 2020, in no small part due to Norway exporting its formerly 'cheap' hydro generated electricity abroad (to the UK & Germany).

According to this:

The cost of residential Electricity in Norway is still less than a third of the cost in the UK (or, at least, was until a year ago).

No wonder then that Norwegian motorists don't seem to mind the transition to EV, unlike here in the UK. I bet that if everyone could charge their EVs at under 10p per kWh (i.e. cheap night tariff), they'll be much less resistance to change here in the UK.

Yes, it tends to get cold the further north you are. Oddly, there has been a much higher take up of EV's in very chilly Scandinavian countries:dk:
More precisely in Norway, where 87% of new car sales are EV because EV's are barely taxed while ICE vehicles are heavily taxed.

Norway, that oil producing nation of just five million people, who all share the pension / social security benefit of their $1.6 trillion sovereign wealth fund.

That's $320k each and rising by 10% every year.

You can with the right tariff.....my neighbour pays 7p per kwh to charge his 208e with OVO. So about 2p per mile to run! My derv car is about 15p per mile at 45 mpg!!! So even if his electric went up buy 500% it would still be slightly cheaper to run than my car!!!

They have EVs? And cheap electricity? And a $1.6 trillion sovereign wealth fund?

See you, chaps! 🧳 ✈️

But its cold and dark half the year!!! No thanks.

Three quarters of Norwegians are blonde with blue eyes.
Every Norwegian I've ever met socially is rich and gets as drunk as a skunk.
(See Alfaitaly's explanation as to why Norwegians get depressed.)

That won’t help the millions who can’t afford an EV though

We've got 34 million ICE motor on the road that need using up.

Only a fool would think that all those are going to be replaced with EV's before 2050.

Not everyone can afford £10k for a four year old electric car.

Skål to Aquavit, Julebrus and Gløgg 🥃

The UK government could easily bring EV prices down, same as the Norwegian government did in Norway:

But we can't cut taxes because we have the NHS to support.... it's a bit like having a child with severe learning difficulties that sadly will need to be supported for life.
Exactly, which is why Labour, the Liberals and the Greens will increase the taxes on both fuel and on ICE vehicles. It's greenwashed taxation.

Getting the working class back into public transport keeps the unions happy.

True, but I am pretty sure that by 2050 there will be quite a few second-hand EVs on the market at the £2,000 price bracket.

Well that's a great message for the government to put out and which ever way you look at it is good news.

But the self righteous tone is bollocks because the comparison with 1879 is false and they know it. The current emissions shown above don't account for emission produced by our imports. We have effectively exported our emissions by have someone else release them on a scale that is nearly double the emissions we are owning up to. This is just one of the reasons why we will never achieve a true net zero.

Long video but to cut a long story short, this Taycan EV owner has a car worth about £40k, 3 years after paying £120k for it.
Problem being he owes the finance company £64k so is around £20k in negative equity.
A new battery is £45k and labour £7k according to him.
Doesn't make good viewing for EV crusaders.
