The EV fact thread

Not sure I’m seeing your point. The repair risks related to eg suspension, steering etc aren’t EV specific, and arguably the really big potential risks (eg new ICE engine, gearbox) aren’t comparable as the EV typically has long warranties on battery/drivetrain items - certainly a lot longer than the typical 3 year ICE equivalent. And the fact still remains that you aren’t shelling out £000s per annum in routine servicing.

Don’t know what your experience of “even more expensive” Tesla workshops/parts is - there were glitches as for the whole industry during Covid/UKR war - but I’m not seeing systemic issues on the Tesla forums now. And there are increasing numbers of EV specialist workshops happy to work on out of warranty cars like mine.
I’m saying the “routine servicing” saving on a six or ten year old EV is more than offset by the higher cost of fixing these arcane things as they roll past 50,000 and on to 150,000. Any garage will try its hand at fixing and maintaining an ICE JLR, but will back away from an I Pace. So that’s extra cost for the owner, higher depreciation AND higher insurance costs, as already well documented.

IPace: ranked 8th out of 9 for reliability

Re- Dacia Spring
137 mile range (prob nearer 100 miles out here in the real world) will be enough for town folks and local use......but even with my low miles that's a bit on the low side for me. Can't deny its cheap though......in more ways than one!!!

Dont know why it needs to be so quick though.....who needs 0-62mph time of 19.1sec and a top speed of 78mph.......?......LOL :)

Dacia Spring due in UK later this year (orders being taken now) at £15k should test whether price is the only obstacle for faster EV take-up?

I think in the case of the Dacia Spring if it doesn't sell so many then it will likely be the range that is the issue more than the price.

I note that you can get a 73 plate prereg delivery mileage C4 EV for £20K with "200" mile range. That looks like a similar sort of litmus test.

(Similar EQC is down to £44.5K - these have been available since before Christmas with price having dropped from £50K).

One noteworthy fact. The Dacia Spring is manufactured in Hubei province, China.

Hubei provinces capital should be familiar to all Westerners as it is a place called Wuhan. You could not make it up.

Thanks for the heads up. If I ever buy one, I'll be sure to wear surgical gloves while driving it.

And don't forget your mask. 🙄😴

I didn't want to start yet another 300-page debate on whether surgical masks are effective or not....

Who cares? Why does it matter?

Couldn’t make what up? :dk:

Nothing arcane about a battery and electric motor - we all grew up playing with such things. The rest of the EV is just a car and no more complex to repair than the ICE. Fewer garages are running scared these days and there are increasing numbers of EV based workshops around the country. Trust the market to meet the need! And if you are rolling past 150000 miles then depreciation is irrelevant whether you are in an EV or an ICE - both will be pretty much depreciated out. I’ll give you the higher insurance (again, until the market sorts itself out - though EVs are apparently not as bad as ICE Range Rovers…) but will happily keep my near zero routine servicing to more than offset that.

As my local bodyshop owner said ‘I can’t be making a fuss to work on em, or I’ll be out of a job soon! 😅

Here's some EV facts for you! Just insured my daily car, a 2019 Mondeo 2.0 diesel and thought today I'd check prices for ev models using all the same criteria, only the car details would be different.
I wanted a similar sized car to the Mondeo so choose a Tesla, price was £5683! I thought that was expensive then realised I'd picked a model S 75D so changed the car to a standard model 3, price for that was £5357. So went to a smaller more basic car, the MG ZS. That was better at £1715.
So: -
Mondeo £1300
Tesla model S £5683
Tesla model 3 £5357
MG ZS £1715.

All depends where you look, for example, I've found a Tesla Model S 100d (the really really fast one) for £800. An MG4 X Power (also very fast) for £500.
So those above figures don't mean anything. Every comparison site has a ridiculous price at the end of the scale being quoted, but obviously no one ever takes them. 🙂
