Trouble setting Linksys router up??

Your ADSL light won't be on until you have correctly configured the router to connect to your ADSL supplier.

Don't know about Linksys, but on my Belkin router no ADSL light means no ADSL signal.

Flashing ADSL light means negotiating a connection, and solid means ADSL up and connected.

Thats what I thought, have just tried setting it up with my laptop, single line to the ADSL with filter, connected everything and booted the laptop.

Still no ADSL light, and no internet connection!!

Tried setting a connection up using the wizard, this is OK but when you try and connect it comes back with not able to reach the remote computer (Or words to that effect!!)

sounds daft but do you have a mate you can take it round too,to see if the router works ok some where else, they can fail and do so often

Signing off for the night, I think I might just dream about routers tonight:o

Bottle of red being uncorked as we speak, thank you everybody for your advice!!!:D :D

Hence my earlier comment, which although a joke, I know the model concerned can be A ok one minute and a buggy mess the next!

yup, my bad, this model has the same meaning as yours, so no ADSL light means no ADSL modem connection, which means you need to look at all the links between the router and the BT wall socket, including trying a different filter. Although, if you can try it round yer mates that would be quicker.

Not wanting to point out the glaringly obvious but....

If you used that same ethernet cable to connect directly to your laptop previously then it must be a crossover cable and not a standard ethernet cable which is what you need.

If you cant get to 192.168.1.1 or whatever, you have no chance of seeing the web. Get that bit sorted before messing with anything else.

(Me thinks you will be buying some CAT5 after breakfast)

We have ADSL people!!!! So, after another reset I have power, wlan and ADSL. But PC still does not see the router?

Now on Spikes point, the Ethernet cable I am using came from a network card I was using to directly connect my PC to my Laptop. It has cat5e patch cable written on it and is yellow(if that helps?) Is this the wrong cable?

Qite possibly - pop along to local place and get a new network cable (Got loads here if you can drive that fast!)

Of to "ahem" PC W"£$% for a cable.

So I dont look like a complete eejit, what do I ask the nice man for? (I Know, I know, you PC techies are probably pulling your hair out over this post!!)

Is it just a network cable??

yes, just a network cable. That should give you what is needed.

In the exceptional circumstance that you find someone who knows anything about PC's () you need a straight through cable, not a crossover.

Have PM'd my mobile to you in case you need help whilst at the shop. I'd help further but have never installed ADSL so would be not much specific help!

How's that red wine?
I'm 15 miles away if you are still having problems!

Just so I understand fully what you are saying, did you previously use this cable to connect yoiur laptop to your PC and not your laptop to the router?

If so, how were you able to talk to the router in order to configure anything so far since this must be a crossover cable? Did you not mentoin that you managed to go go through the wizard earlier? Have you ever been able to talk to the router directly?

Quick update!!

Thanks everybody for your help to this point!

Progress so far.

1.Was given a router by Mozzer.
2.Connected it to my PC, rebooted the PC and got no ADSL light on it.
3.Reset the router several times, and now have ADSL.
4.Thought I had the wrong network cable (see post) so have bought a new one (cat6) from PC world today.
5.Gone through the setup again, with just a phone line and filter to the wall socket.
6.Everything looks OK, but the PC does not see the router.
7.When I open Explorer, as per the instructions and type in http://192.168.1.1 to access the web configuration page it cant connect.
8.Stumped!!

Any further help would be great!!

Cheers,

trying to find the root of the problem.....

With just the router connected to the PC, no modem, no nothing else, right click on your network icon in the system tray and select open network connections

post a screengrab of that or type the text displayed

Andy

Thats just it Andy, can see my Tiscali Broadband connection (enabled), my modem connection (disabled), 1394 net adaptor connection (connected, but to what??) and the local area connection (Cable unplugged) This was the network card I had to the laptop.

With just the router connected via the CAT6 cable to your PC (without any phone line connection).

I don't think the issue is with the router

Looks like the drivers for your network card are not installed. Seems like the network card is built into the PC motherboard. Is this the laptop or your desktop PC? What make/model is it? When the network (CAT6) cable is plugged in do you get a green steady or flashing light next to it or an orange light or no light at all?

Also looks like you are trying connect both the router and the Tiscali modem to your PC at the same time. Is this the case?
