What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

Nothing at all today. Waiting for my family to get themselves into gear.

Just tyre shopping. Unfortunately Pirelli don’t make matching tyres in the right sizes for the front and rear axle, and it seems other premium manufacturers tend not to too.
After a slow start, we finally went out for dinner at one of my favourite restaurant which is at the opposite end of some of my favourite roads. Perfect.

What’s the verdict?
Although the mounts weren't really bad (car 12 years old and 58k miles), as I plan to keep it I decided to replace all mounts sooner rather than later. The ride is noticeably smoother and zero vibration in steering wheel. Very pleased. :)

I did something similar. I didn’t think the mounts “needed doing” but did them as they would do at some point, and the difference was more than I thought. Enjoy.

Replaced my broken engine cover with missing badge, for a new one - actually I think it was used but cleaned up to pretty much new condition. Now it looks cleaner and newer than my air box covers, I did give them a blast with brake cleaner - this helped but I think my OCD will have me removing the air box covers to clean them properly somehow at the weekend...

I hope @badgx doesn’t see that dirty engine ! ;)

Not sure if anything can be done about the mismatch in colour, the air box has most likely faded in colour with prolonged exposure to engine heat. I think the only way round this would be to spray paint both the air box and front cover using enamel based paint. The emblem will need to come off too but can reinstall afterwards. It's good weather now to do a little detailing and great time to prepare the undercarriage for winter months ahead 🙂

I've seen it mate, that would most certainly keep me awake at night 🙂

Any tips for engine bay cleaning gratefully received!

Cheers, yeah that's sort of what I thought. I guess the new front cover will discolour in time. I'm hoping not to be spending too much time looking under the bonnet with this car anyway so I think I can wait!

Just finished changing the E class power steering fluid , I thought I would start with the harder car (the CLK looks to have easier pipe access ) .
I ended up having to remove the air filter box on the side of the om642 as well as the air intake tube to the front of the car . The coolant tank I released from its bracket so it had a bit of movement .
All this was to allow access for a small tub below the overflow tank as well as the return pipe clic-r clamp which needed undoing .
I jacked the car up at the front so there was no pressure on the steering as a refilled the overflow , with the old fluid coming out of the return pipe (plenty of stuff on YouTube for this method) .
I used 1.5L of fluid in the process ( I bought 3L to do both cars) .
Here are the shots of old fluid and new . Car was 2009 with 129k on the fluid

This was all for you @Petrol Pete

That's the way I do it....but usually over a few days to flush the old stuff out. Disturbing power steering pipes that might not have been moved since the car was built just to change the PS fluid seems like asking for trouble to me.....

Filled one with four humans, one small dog and far too much stuff and travelled 240 miles in 6 hours from Devon to the Midlands, managing 23.4 MPG, helped by the heavy rain and heavy traffic.

I wouldn’t have believed that there would be so much traffic heading North on the Friday of August bank holiday. Apart from the first 5 miles on the M5 we didn't touch 70 MPH until we crossed the M6 on the M42!

If anything Southbound looked lighter than a normal Friday as there were no stretches of very slow crawling traffic in either direction, not even the M5 southbound between Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare.

Off to the powder coaters with my spare set

Since it was a rare sunny day here, took the coupe out for a change. Bodywork is very good but doesn't drive as nice as my old (t)rusty saloon.
